mirror polishing?

I made 1 true mirror polished knife, but that took me nearly 12 hours of hand sanding... Can it be done directly off the grinder to the buffer? I bought some new belts going all the way to 2000 grit and a cork belt... can this take a blade to mirror? Is there a better/easier/faster way?

Thanks

Yes. If you go down to 16 on the belt grinder, check it by going length wise by hand with a 600 and if no course scratches seen, go to the buffer with either the white or the green. Frank

And I also have a brand new cork belt, not sure if that is of any assistance, but Ive seen lots of makers use them, so I said what the heck.

Truth is, mirror "polishing" has more to do with sanding than it does polishing. If you have any scratches left after grinding and sanding, you just end up with shiny scratches. ;)
If you have a properly finished surface, mirror polishing takes very little time.
Like so much of the other steps of knife making, most of the work is in preparations.
