Miscellaneous rambling of a Usual Suspect

I have had a total of 8 customs, now i am down to 2 CQC6's, one i carry and one is a case sitter.I have always been of the opinion that if i am going to spend my hard earned cash, that i should use it and enjoy it. Knives, Guns, Harleys, Tattoos and Comics are all things that i have spent a pretty good chunk of change on. Now i would definately be mortified if i lost my 6 since i would have to get another to replace it but i really don't worry about losing it as i am fairly cautious about what is in my possesion.I have always been facinated with edged weapons in general since birth. When i saw my first ad for a CQC6 i knew i had to have one and it took me a little while too. I love acquireing new customs but the hunt and meeting a fine group of people like the Usual Suspects is just as great just different. Like the man said "if ya gottem, smoke'm". I love the look of the Fancies but i can't use them so i would probably never buy them unless i hit the lotto, so the search for more tacticals will continue.

Interesting topic. Of my 8 custom Emersons the only one I carry is my Specwar prototype. I also agree the newer customs have a better lockup and are very very sharp, whether zero grind or secondary bevel.

Secondary thought. Although I have about 60 customs, none are as important to me as my Emersons. The reason? Ernie. For those of us who know him nothing more need be said.

I own a few custom Emersons. Like Don, I started out with the intention of them being a carry piece. Never happened.

Like Bladelaw mentioned, I have other customs. I can say that I have met the makers on the customs I have and have a very clear impression of each maker. A maker could make the best knife in the world, but if he's a dick, I'm not owning one of his knives. One person clearly comes to mind (I'm sure some will be able to guess).

Ernie is without a doubt one of the nicest and congenial makers in the business. A true "Gentleman" is every sense of the word. I guess that's one reason I treasure them like I do.

Back to carry pieces. None of the Emerson customs I own are carried. Luckily I found the Commander. I own several '98 Commanders and am always looking for more (call me, we can talk

). These are every bit the knife that the customs are. Awesome feel, strength and lock up. (but you don't want them, call me, we'll talk

)

I have chosen to focus my collection towards the ES1-M family, but would love to get my hands on a CQC8, especially a waved one. I'm holding out hope for the lottery at the Blade Show.

All are kept neatly tucked away in the safe, but will be brought to Atlanta for the "show and tell" Suspect lunch.

DD - I understand that "6" of yours served you well when you needed it to. Now, if, for whatever reason it was lost/stolen/broken/whatever (or lets say the Brit version of INS kept it after your encounter with that pipe-weilding individual) would you reinvest all that money in another custom, or would you ratchet down a bit and get "just" a production version?

I'd carry my other CQC6 in that case !

Seriously, I would try my best to buy another one, it served me well the first time, and I have no problem in buying the right equipment to carry on duty. I may pay more for it, but it has to work when I need it most. My life has no price tag on it.
