Dumb question but do misch metal rods have the same composition throughout or is just surface? It seems that now I have used the rod all the way round well that it acts like a ferro rod now and throws sparks but not globs
 
It should be the same all the way through.
 
Hmmmm....

I have one that's pretty well used and it still throws lava balls about 1/8th in from the surface.
 
You might find with some rods that you have to use more of a slicing action instead of scraping with the blade. It takes off more material this way but creates nice fire balls.
 
Roughed it up and that seemed to fix the prob. I had been using blade spine or goinggear striker and it had become smooth
