Misplaced my Griptilian... what to do now?

I've been using and loving a Benchmade mini-grip for the past 3ish years and really enjoyed it. I loved the tanto blade, combo edge and general look of the knife(black with green scales). I misplaced it and hate myself for it, but I really need to get a replacement. I've been browsing the forums for a while and could use some direct assistance with this.

Right now I'm looking at the 553(Red scales, black, tanto & comboedge) and the 940 models but since I'll probably use this every day for the next few years I want to make sure I don't overlook something. Without going to a liner lock, are there any other similar good looking knives? I wouldn't mind going with something with fancy scales like the 482's cocobolo wood & carbon fiber or even just a nice exotic wood but it has to have a clip, I don't want to fish through my pockets for it.

TL;DR: EDC knife to replace BM grip

Must: belt clip, combo edge, Axis or similar lock, good looking scales, high quality materials
Like: black blade, tanto
Not: all metal scales, liner lock

I spent a ton of time reading threads but couldn't come up with the answer so I posted this, thanks in advance for any help!

Was there anything you found that you didn't like about the mini-grip?

If so, what? Knowing this will allow us to give better recommendations.
Based on the fact that you are looking at the 553 (a non-mini model) and 940, is it safe to assume you want something larger than the mini-grip?

If not, sounds like you've found yourself a winner and might consider sticking to the tried and true.

Take a look at the Benchmade Sequel 707. It has a slightly longer blade, but a slightly shorter and slimmer aluminum handle with a G10 insert.

Large Sebenza with DT Spirograph Damascus of course. ;)

Yeah, i was just thinking that it sounds like time to upgrade to a sebenza. If you really love knives i feel that you should own a sebenza at least once in your life. (also a ffg spyderco, and a big combat/survival knife)

Yeah go for a spyderco, a sebenza, or go custom ;)

But seriously check out some of the sweet makers here. you will pay for your knife, but it will be the last one you will have to buy. Or just buy a new benchmade. If you liked the black tanto blade with the green handles check out knifeworks. they have a bunch of them.

I just wish the custom option was a bit cheaper. My hypothetical knife was 155 bucks.

OP, with your Must list, it's going to be rough. If you want to stick with Benchmade, a full size griptillian is not much more than the mini for cost, and easy to find a combo edge. The model 15020 Bone Collector has been a favorite of mine, but it's a huge knife.

You also may want to look at a Spyderco Manix2.

Wow how did I not see the custom option before? What are the actual differences between the blade materials and are they noticeable?

I'm not really a knife connoisseur and before the grip I hadn't even EDC'd a knife, with that said it met nearly every expectation I had of it. In the past 6 months I'd started sharpening knives and could get most extremely sharp but the grip I couldn't get past what is still very sharp. I'm sure it was just my technique so I wouldn't even begin to blame the steel or blade, but that was the only thing that wasn't extremely positive.

The reason I was leaning towards the grip vs the mini was because I'm a tall(6'7) guy so I don't think the bit of extra knife would be unwieldy or uncomfortable. While I'm not against getting something custom or really nice within a reasonable price, if I really fell in love with something I could peak at ~200.

I really loved my previous knife, but I'd like to be aware of what's out there because I usually take great care of things and don't lose them. Misplacing it drove me crazy because I'm 90% sure it's somewhere in the car and I've done everything but remove the carpet looking.

I found a guy selling the actual red scales(I think from the training knife) for $25, so that would be on top of what I would get. I love black and red together which is why I'm leaning towards that, but I wouldn't mind a classy looking exotic wood style. It just had to have something similar to the Axis lock, I never want to touch another liner lock if I can avoid it.

Cuscadi makes some beautiful scales for the Griptilian. http://www.cuscadi.de/2011/11/08/benchmade-griptilian-landscape/ in many different materials, including wood.
I would order a custom grip from the benchmade site. Choose your blade style and material. Some custom text on the blade maybe? then order a set of stock scales in whatever colour you want as a backup. But if you're willing to spend the cash, these cuscadi's are AMAZING

Benchmade AFCK in m390 if your gonna stay with benchmade! Big knife for a big guy! Knifeworks has some

I second those who say to get another Griptilian. For a higher price, the Ritter Grip has a very nice blade shape in S30V steel. You can always upgrade the scales later if you want, but for now you need to have a knife on your person.

Another vote for Spyderco Manix 2. I have both the Grip and Manix, and the Manix is superior to me. The G10 scales feel better than the plastic on the Grip. No more annoying "thwack".
