well they found him, in an extremely steep ravine (harvey creek, near Lions bay BC)

sad.

That area is so steep and brutal that even us young uns have issues hiking it. The creek ravine he fell into CANNOT be climbed out or walked out of. A SAR technician rappelled from the chopper into the ravine with a litter to retrieve him. :(

yup, he left for Hollyburn ridge (WAY TOO LATE IN THE DAY) last Sunday, intending on hitting the ridge and hiking down the other side. Problem was he started hiking at 1400 hours. To get to that ridge you need to start at latest around 0800 hours, if you want to get back before dusk. I'm betting (haven;t heard back yet) that he got caught by dark and was hiking on the trail and slipped (horrible trail conditions + steep trails + dark = BAD)

typical trail in BC: heavily rooted, WET, loose rock/shale, uneven, STEEP, slippery. Now add darkness, fatigue and poorly marked trails, rain and fog.

looks easy but trail below slopes up about 30% grade.

its too bad about this one. should have turned around when he realized that he wouldnt make it to the peak and back before nightfall. or like i said in the other thread, pitch camp somewhere on the ridge and make it down the next day at first light. may have been a safer choice.
