Any opinions on this knife or any of the Mission Folders? I am starting to get the fever and want to know how the titanium blade holds and edge and quality of construction. I am a Tanto fan, good for armor piercing.LOL! ;)
Any thoughts or comments?
Thanks,
Alpha

From what I have read mission knives are probably the best titanium knives. That said H1 steel, which will also not rust, will hold an edge much better than titanium. Also, Spyderco's salt series in H1 steel will be cheaper than the mission knives. I guess the question is why do you need a titanium knife? If it is for the rust resistance get something from Spyderco's salt series. If it is for non-magnetic properties or the tanto shape or the coolness of a titanium knife, get the mission knife.

I own the exact same knife in the pics. It is my dedicated swimming knife. I have not used it, but it is very mechanically sound.

I'm very curious about the edge retention.

For all intensive purposes, titanium does not hold an edge, as a matter of fact, it doesn't even take much of an edge.

It doesn't get very sharp, and it doesn't hold that dull edge worth anything anyways. Unless you absolutely need something that won't corrode ever it's a waste. H1 steel is the way to go, or even that cobalt alloy that's out there.

What buisiness do you have stabbing anything or anyone wearing "armor?" Titanium will just bend if it hits steel, you won't penetrate armor, especially not with a knife, you could cut fabric, but not armor. Which is classically steel plating.

OP--- Go to the Mission Forum to get accurate answers. Depending on what you will use your Mission Titanium knife for, they are hard to beat. I have the MPT Ti.

Hey Rolf... thanks again for selling me your MPF-ti :D

Want an honest opinion from a recognized knife PRO, ask STR (Steve Rice) he has forum here on his site. I sold him one of my five missions. He now owns a Mission MPF 3 TI PE. In fact he has posted on here about several times.

The knives are fine, tough as hell, come scary sharp and hold a serviable edge. I know this for fact as I carried and used them exclusively for three years. I stopped using them because of a design flaw which causes lock problems, the angle on the tang is practically non existent and after some real world use the blade is going to start to have some noticable vertical blade play. For the price of the Mission I'm not going to tolerate poor design and vertical play.

Anyway, ask STR what he thinks are look up some of his old post, the guy knows knives and he really likes the one I sold him. He knows how to keep fixing the lock problem so to him its no big deal but to me its a deal breaker.

good on ya, nothing's worse than being caught out in the open by a pack of samurai with nothing but a clip-point. more people are killed that way every year than die in automobile accidents.

I recently -- finally -- got an MPF-1 clippoint plain edge. I've been using it as my regular kitchen knife to see how it holds up and I'm still happy with it. It keeps the original sharp edge just as my MPU and MBK do.

It is not a bushcraft knife but it seems to hold up nicely as a daily utility.

You have no idea what you're talking about. It's no help repeating mistakes someone else has passed on to you.

This matches my experience. Actually, I was surprised how sharp and durable the edge has been.

I have 5 years of experience with a Mission MPK and over 2000 dives in 4 continents including Antarctica that says you are full of $%@#.

When I was a Marine Biology grad student at UCSB I did over 300 dives a year and would do a season every year in the Ross Sea as part of APIS (Antarctic Pack Ice Seals).

The only knife I ever bought that didnt rust out was the Mission MPK.

It cut everything, sharpened great, took a great edge, and was used as everything from a knife to a hammer to a pry bar. It was used to cut line, cut tubing and PVC, chip out ice holes, cut wire, and even to open up a Leopard seal on the deck of the Nathaniel B. Palmer (just to name a few things).

It will suit you just fine. Don't listen to the arm-chair Rangers.

Thanks for all the valuable information. Especially to the ones that have owned and field tested this piece of equipment. I will be adding one in the near future to my line up.
PS I stabbed a Samurai last night after leaving a sushi bar. Caught the poor bastard off guard. I guess he thought I only had a toothpick on me. Then again I could have had my wife shoot him with her S&W snub nose .38 airweight? She was carrying + P ammunition in case we ran into ninjas. LOL!!! :)

Rolf, I had sent the new owner a list of suggestions for new folders which were just basically modifications and improvements to the existing MPF models based off of my actually using the knives in the field for hunting and fishing in South Louisiana.

I don't think any of them were followed, it is my understanding that some new folders are in the works but I don't think from what I've seen there going to be an improvement at least from a user stand point, maybe from a collector stand point where the knife will be a safe queen. The new ones look tacticool but without the design problems being mediated people who actually buy these things to use them are going to be pissed off as the material is kick ass and will virtually last forever, but it does you no good if because of design problems the knife if actually used is going to wear out in 3 years.

The fixed blades are fine and are good to go its just a straight piece of metal, but again the folders have some problems that need to be addressed are their going to have problems with pissed off customers unless as I'm starting to suspect that many of the folders are being sold to people who aren't using them very much or at all and most of these knives are sitting in safes, cases, drawers are even a pocket but their not seeing any use.

AlphaHunter, enjoy your knife I think you'll be surprised as how sharp it comes and how well the edge holds and the over all durability of the edge. When I first went to get one I got tons of the same comments one guy even told me I must have a been a fantasy gamer to even be considering a titanium knife. Well, I got one anyway and I was very surprised with how sharp it was and how long it stayed sharped, also the fact that you could beat the hell out of the thing and the blade would not chip. I only rolled a small portion of the edge once when I was cutting some fairly thick metal wire that was encapsulated in a heavy plastic sheathing. If my knife had been sharper I don't even think small roll in the edge would have happened, it would have just sliced right through it.

I have helped many people get their first one and even sold three people their first one, I get the same response eventually after some use from everyone. Wow, I really like this knife and the titanium holds an edge a lot better than I thought it would.
