Mitsuboshi Cutlery Ozark Trail Fixed Blade Knife

That looks good! Nice job fixing it up. I've only had bad results with OT gear, so it is nice to see something positive about it.

This is great. It is a comfort to know that I am not the only Ozark Trail (OT) enthusiast. The only difference between us and those guys with their BRKTs and RATs and the like is that we have an extra $150.00 bucks in our pockets. I mean, when you get down to it, a knife is a blade and a handle. If you can get it sharp (which is not that hard to do) and do something with the handle, you got yourself a decent knife that you do not have to worry about, plus 150.00 left over for a bunch of other gear.

Now, if we can just find a decent sheath for it.......

<sarcasm> Yes, your Walmart made in China, mystery steel knife is in every way equivalent to a $100 RAT. Those people that buy those things.... poor fools.</sarcasm>

On EDIT: I am NOT responding to the idea that a $ 10 knife can work well. More power to ya. I AM responding to the idea that the only difference between a RAT/BRKT/BK&T ect. and a $10 is the price.

Darthsoaker,

Of course the Ozark Trails is a piece of junk and I would much rather have a custom knife and sheath from Christof and Sierra. Right now, I've got a kid who is trying to pay off a tuition bill and get back to college. Times are tough and until they get better, this is what I am willing to spend right now so that I can support my son's educational plans. Not everyone can afford a 100.00 knife. That should not stop us from getting outdoors. The 10.00 OT Wally World Special will cut, baton and scrape a fire steel. As long as you take the time and some grip tape to make it safe, you can have some fun with it and not break the bank.

Now of course, if you would like to send me a custom knife......:D

MBTull,

Looks like a very servicable $10.00 blade. Good for you for trying it out. Remember the old saying that the "The right survival knife is the one that you have on you" In my opinion it is better than having to find a sharp rock!

I am not sure what people hope to gain form all the off color negative remarks that have been posted.

J Williams,

I am not being argumentative, Why do you feel he would be better off with a partial tang mora over a full tang knife of questionable steel?

Paul

MBTull, thanks for the great review of the blade. Don't let the negs bother you, possibly a bit of blade snobbery going on. I carried a £6.50 sheath knife for many years and it did everything I asked of it. I would still have it if I hadn't lost it :(

There's many folks will tell you to use a knife for cutting, as it's designed for. Looks like you got one that can do that and handle the batoning as well. Good find.

As long as we are aware of the limitations of our tools and use them accordingly, and they *all* have limitations, all's well and good!

Well. I feel that the heat treat on the carbon steel moras have been proven to be good, and have seen many things done with one that was down right impresseve. Edge holding and ease of sharpining is probably better too. It comes down to looking at a Mora that is the same price, and has been proven.

A partial tang of good steel, I would take any day over a potentially brittle chinese mystery steel. However, as I said, whatever works for him. Its more importamt to me that he is enthusiastic about skills, and will get out and do them, no matter what he has to do them with. Survival at its best, doin good with what you have!

I dont agree with that at all. Have you ever owned a custom, or a RAT to compare it to?

Im happy that you found somethin you like on a budget, but its unfair to trash the guys who spend alot on there blades. I guarantee you if you used my Laconico HWK+ you would change your tune!
