Mitternacht Camp Knife

Thanks very much for the comments - all are appreciated.

I'm number one on the waiting list!:

IF I ever start taking orders, you are first in. But they don't make a font big enough for that "if". :o I don't like my chances of convincing my wife that a second mortgage to build a knife shop would be a good idea.

I'll be asking Paul Long to make a sheath for me so that I can haul it out to the woods when I go back to Dan's and chop the heck out of stuff.

And my sincere thanks again to Dan.

Roger

what about post #5? :D

Roger,
Congratulations! I think you've been bitten by this knifemaking bug. Really a joy, reading and seeing the photos- you make a good step-by-step guide, and entertaining! Talent (and personality!) ;)

Tell us, where did you get the name? ..thought you might call it "Murph". :)

No worries. Wouldn't want your first 'commercial' bowie to be Exhibit A and your wife to be a suspect. But if (same "if" you used) you're able to, I'll be waiting.

Tell us, where did you get the name?

It's zwei und fünfzig past mitternacht at this Messerfanatiker's haus right now. Maybe from a clock?

Roger has a great talent both with words and his knifemaking skills. That knife is very nice to handle and we had a great time talking about it the other day and just to let you all know, I'm way ahead on the "dibs" line but he said I'd need about $3k to afford what he'd need to charge for all the time and effort. Guess we will have to abandon that idea. I'm sure once the sheath is done it will be a super package and one Roger will have fun with out in the Wilds.

what about post #5? :D

Well, Thom has been asking to place an order since the first knife I posted, several threads ago. But I am deeply gratified that you and others have expressed and interest as well.

David - Mitternacht = Midnight in German.

But now that you mention it, "Murph" might be a better choice.

Roger

Roger,
-I think "midnight" in German suits it well. Again, congratulations on this beauty! A lot to be proud of..

(Let's just say that the blue streak I cussed out when I saw that the belt had cut through the protective tape - like, well, a freaking grinder belt through freaking tape - is unprintable. Yep - there was a bright little patch of metal peeking out at me - MOCKING ME - pointing out that I had just ruined the blade finish with my own ineptness. Great, just great.)

I wonder how many of us have taken credit for really neat design concepts that were merely the product of an "aw $hit!" :D Nice knife Roger, you should feel pleased with that one in your collection.
Paul

Great thread Roger!

I am really amazed by your skills. And I am really found of that bronze. Where can I get details about it? Will try to find it in Brazil.

How does it behave over time?

Hi Jeff,

I wish I could be helpful on the bronze, but I don't have a lot of info. I was rummaging through Dan's guard material drawer, and amongst the stainless and nickel silver was this shiny gold bar. I asked "What's this?" Dan said "bronze". I said "Me likey."

It's an interesting bit of material - looks kind of coppery-reddish in some light and more yellow in others (as it does in the photos).

My understanding is that it will take on a darker patina over time, but not develop the heavy tarnish that one associates with brass.

It's fairly soft and easy to work. It will no doubt scratch more easily than stainless, but then it will also be vastly easier to touch up and make like new.

Thanks for your comments, and thanks again to all.

Roger

Great job Roger,

Amazing how fate and ole mister Murphy can sometimes move us out of our comfort zone and make us better at what we do..

Great Job!!

Steve

Roger, another great post! Thanks for sharing and taking the time to put this together. I guess I'm already behind a few on your waiting list, #5 maybe? Grind out a few more of those big blades for your first few orders then we talk about a sweet "little" hunter!
