Yikes! I don't know if I want to know! I'd never get a knife finished again! Definitely somthing to think about in the future though.
Count- the parts have been ordered but I like your idea of using bits as test blocks. Thanks for the tip.
 
And don't pull anything apart until you have the parts!!!! For all you know, it didn't lose zero.
 
Just shy of 100 once shipping and taxes were added. I saw a few complete gauges on ebay for around that price but not with all original parts. I'd rather fix up the one I have anyway.
There are many like it but this one is mine.
 
LOVELY tool, I use a similar one in my friend's shop. We use it to check thickness of material and scribe edge-grinding guides. I don't mind the vernier scale one bit, though you do need to have plenty of light to read it. I deal with electronic stuff for a living, and am delighted when I get to use fully mechanical measuring systems. So much less to go wrong in most cases.
