I'm not sure you guys want to see yet another picture of yet another knife. I mean, you guys know what knives look like, seen 'em before, etc.... But I really like this knife and wanted to share it with some other knife knuts. (My wife just doesn't get it: "OK, it's a knife. How much did it cost?")
Made by Matt of ML Knives, it is 9.5" OAL, has a full tang with a 5" handle of Ivory micarta slabs pinned with brass pins, and a 4.5" blade of 1095. Matt calls it his Woods & Bush model. I call it sweet. I think it's a pretty classic bushcrafting design. It may be my favorite knife.
I'm tempted to say "this is it, I don't need anymore knives", but let's not fool ourselves here.
However, it is the kind of knife that makes me think of becoming monogamous.
I won't be able to describe the feel of this knife adequately. It has great balance and a very solid feel. I asked Matt to try Ivory Micarta for the handles--Matt is extremely nice to work with by the way--and I think they turned out really nicely.
I tried a few different grips and it's very comfortable all around. The micarta handle is finished to feel smooth like ivory and it could be slick when wet--time will tell. Nevertheless, I think the woven lanyard is a good idea for this handle.
Those of you who know Matt's work, know what excellent knives he makes, and this one continues to uphold his well deserved reputation of excellence. Fit and finish are excellent, blade came razor sharp (I managed to get bit right away!), and he makes a really good sheath.
Anyway, for those of you wondering which bushcrafting knife you should get, definitely consider an ML knife. I'd put this up against any woodcraft knife out there. (When are we going to have a maker's Bushcrafter Challenge?)
(And I'd love to see some pics of other people's ML knives--post 'em up!)
