These are some pictures from the MLK Weekend Winter Camping Trip that was posted on here for anyone to attend. At last count, we had almost 40 signed up. We only had 20 show but those 20 practice winter survival skills with us and learned some practical know how in the process. Many laughs were had, friendships strengthened and far too much food was eaten (but thank you Jerry!) Hopefully more will be able to attend these trips in the future. We have one planned for February at the Wilderness Learning Center in Chateaugay, NY if anyone is willing to brave the North woods cold. For now, here are some pics or food for thought.

The parking area. Plenty of room for even more cars that were expected.

Awesome pics, I've been waiting a while for that trip to happen so I could see the results! Questions, questions...

- Did you get a chance to test that large chopper from Gossman that you had talked about in the past? Looked like a goodun.

- Do you keep your pistol on when you've got your pack on? I've always had a hard time deciding how to manage that one.

- What kind of ruck are you packin?

- How ya diggin the Fiskars? :D

is the Feb get together at the Center on Sandy Knoll Rd? If so, I'm even closer than I thought.

Great pics Kev. What an awesome weekend. That Wetterlings forest axe is a powerhouse.
I got to test an 8" Tusker made with 8670 modified steel (alternative to L6). It was fantastic. I chopped and batoned a huge amount of wood. It batoned 4, 9" in diameter, about 18" in length stumps of seasoned oak into 5, splits per stump. Sailed though the oak. I'm very pleased with this steel.
Great to see old friends and meet some new ones. 11 degrees this morning.

Spooky,

I carry an Eagle Industries A-III pack with side pockets attached. More than enough room for my gear this weekend. I packed some gear I didn't even get around to testing/evaluating.

As for my Gossman Tusker, I'm sure someone will post pics of me using it. 3/16" A2 Steel convexed and given the Gossman heat treat made quick work of frozen oak. An old school but very popular knife chipped badly during battoning the same wood. I won't name it but I'll say it has been seen cutting through metal before.

I carry my Glock 21 in a Galco Concealable holster. I wear it on my belt and my hip belt rides between the handle and my waist. With waterbottle holders, no one notices it.

As for the fiskars, I didn't bring one this time. I know, I've been a diehard fiskars fan but I thought I'd bring my Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe I picked up in 1999 on a trip to LL BEAN. It worked flawlessly!

Awesome pics Kev! looks like you all had a terrific time. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome pics, thanks for sharing, and I really wish I could have been there. Maybe next time. Gene

Great pics!! I love seeing the Bark River Fox River in action.

You just can't beat winter camping!!

It looks like you have another knife on your sheath. what is it and did you have to have that sheath made for you or did it come that way? I hope I am not seeing things.
Thanks
Bryan

I don't piggyback knives anymore. I have a Swedish firesteel in the loop on my sheath. Nate, my childhood buddy, has a mikro canadian II piggbacked on his Fox River. The newer sheaths are all modular for the BRKT knives. Really a nice system.

OOPS I thought that was yours. And yes that is a neat system. Thanks for posting the pics. One more ? Have you handle the Canadian Special since the fox river and the canadian special seem to be about the same in lenght and in blade thickness and if you have what are your thoughts on it.
Thanks
Bryan

K Estela nice job on the get together, sorry to not have made it North for the event. Did folks get to swap knives and try one another's edc's? Did it really merit cutting down a living (green wood) tree in order to have wood, or could your group have scavenged the area for standing deadfall? I usually can find plenty of standing deadfall/dead dry wood for my fires without resorting to cutting down trees unnecessarily. besides, dry deadfall does'nt pop and spark half as much as that green pine did. Why did you feel it necessary to pack along a sidearm on a group camping trip, when all those knives were present?; just curious, and are you a LEO? Great pictures!
