Can the clip on the MM be reversed for tip up carry?

Is their any possibility of a black finished clip?

I am strongly interested in a reversible clip as well. I understand that DDR has a dislike of tip-up carry, but a lot of us have an equally strong preference in favor of it. Any chance we could get the Maxx drilled for both options?

I'm not sure its a good idea to carry that big monster tip up. The integral guards on the blade could snag on your pocket seam upon withdraw from the pocket. It could pop open a la Emerson Commander....not sure if I want a blade that big "doin' the Wave" on me :)

Dex,

Memnoch is a Wave freak -- I think your answer just got him all hot and bothered...;)

That also violates Mr. Emerson's patent on the "Wave", and a reason why I am certain Camillus would not have a tip-up feature on this knife. OH, if a Madd Maxx ever opens up in your pocket accidentally in a "tip-up" mode, you will quickly find out reason number two!

I doubt the patent is quite that broad. And the Maxx was not designed for that purpose. I don't see how adding extra holes so the clip can be remounted would infringe on anyone.

Bob - it's not drilling extra holes in the handle to mount the clip to carry the knife tip up that violates the Wave patent, it is just the idea that the blade of any knife - upon being withdrawn from the pocket - can be opened by catching the blade spine on the pocket seam that does violate the patent. It's not what it looks like but what it does.

Ok Folks,...here we go....

memnoch,
Sorry, no black clip options. The clip is, however, nicely toned down in a matte ceramic bead blast. Its not shiny at all. Flat grey.

Also, the knife will not, ever, come from CAMILLUS set up for a tip up option. There are 3 reason. First and most importantly, safety. We just do not think that tip-up is a safe carry method for ANY folders using liner or frame locks. No mattr how good your ball detent is, the blade can be dislodged, and once it is, it is FREE to open on up. As we all know, other locks, the blade should be pulled back into the handle in this case, but in the frame lock and liner lock, once its dislodged at all, you have serious trouble on your hands. This is simply not acceptable. If you think that it can't happen to you, you need to think again.

Personally, I have had 3[!] instances of folding knves cutting me while in my pocket. All cases were with tip up carry knives. One custom, and 2 "semi-custom" . All three were excellent quality. All three had what would be considered VERY GOOD ball detent engagement. All three cut the $h1t out of me when I reached in my pocket. The SMALLEST one took the top right off my left middle finger knuckle. CAMILLUS will not expose its customers to those dangers.

No, I will not divuldge what model knives these were.

Secondly,
We respect other's patents. If the MAXX 5.5 were set up with tip-up carry-clip, you could "do the wave". It was not designed that way, as the two horns were clearly designed as guards. It wasn't until after DDR built the first one that we were even sure it would work as a Flipper. I believe it was Anthony Lombardo that first showed Darrel and I that it would open like the "wave" , if you put the knife upside down in your pocket. The comment was then made about some fool cutting his leg off doing it:rolleyes:

Ernie Emerson has a patent on the "wave " feature, and we respect that, period.

Keep those cards and letters comin' folks!

Hi
The clip on the Madd Maxx is tip down.
One's private parts are very precious.

The wave feature is an Emerson design.

Myself and Camillus do not want to infrindge on a patent.

Thanks.

Thank you for the answers.

As for doing a tip up thing with this knife, well, I have to wonder, is it worth the risk to my balls...

yeah. I guess it is.

The bonus of a blade that big being able to deploy that fast are impressive. I cannot at the least ignore those options for exploration myself.

If it works, OH MAN...

I was going to have a framelock conversion done to a super commander, this will save me the trouble if it works.

Their are risks...yes, but those have to be taken into balance with the benifits. I believe they will even out.

VOODOO CHILD - I think you will be pleased. :)

I also include filler screws for the unused end.

And if you want a darker clip, have Dirk put skateboard tape on it. I think it was Dirk's Aftermath done that way that I saw at the Koval show.

If you all have not been convinced by Will's post and by Darrell's post about the stupidity of carrying a CUDA MAXX 5.5 in a tip-up mode, then all that I can say is "God help you, for no-one else can."

Tip up..cut myself no way. Wasn't a max!

I love my MAXX. I think of mine as dual purpose. I have always carried a Kubaton or such but now I have the MAXX. It can be used with many of the same techniques and if needed it can be opened to escalate the use of force. I will even palm it without opening it if I feel a little orange.

There are many times when I don't want my knife open as soon as it comes out of my pocket. In fact sometimes I only crack the knife open a little to make a cut. I am a little paranoid someone might see it and there reaction wouldn't be the same as opening a little SAK.

Don't bother with 'the wave'. Once you learn some proper inertia openings you'll hardly use the flippers.
