He's worked with several geological firms over the years, and taught me the in's and out's of using a transit. His was older, and solid aluminum, whereas mine is ABS, but still decent. I actually used mine sometime back to measure angles for stairs and stair-railing on a home-built deck. I also use it for blazing trails, but other than that, its sorta an expensive paperweight much of the time.
