Mobile sharpening service update

I'm in the process of starting a sharpening business and would like to pick your brain if you don't mind.I've purchased a van and am in the process of setting it up,any tips would be much appreciated.
Congrats. I hope it all works as you hope! Having a van will be a big help. I would be happy to answer any of your questions about setting it up and how to get some knives in it.

As a lifelong culinary person and small business owner myself i say congratulations and wish you further success.
You have a great idea going on.
Have you considered going to "food truck Fridays" or other gatherings like that and setting up shop for a few hours?

Thats a great idea,I will consider it.I'm in Nj right across from Philly,I'm sure there are places there I can go.I am going to concentrate on knives and scissors,I'm an ex barber and love to cook.In all of my Barber years I threw my scissors out as I couldn't find a decent sharpener.

Bazzle, FrankRapp,
I would think if you could get to a hipster area you could find many barbers who would need your service.
Are you able to sharpen electric clipper blades?

I've looked into the equipment, its expensive, and I'm not sure if its worth it.Again in all of my Barber years I never got them sharpened, but one sharpener I talked to said the money is in Dog Grooming Blades, they dull much quicker.I want to do Stylist shears as they can spend 400 on a pair of shears and pay 30 to get them sharpened, and need them done often for todays styles. The equipment is 1000 but I think its worth it.

Congratulations, I love hearing success stories! I hope you continue to expand and do very well!

FranRapp,

If you already have a background in salons, I would go that route. Is there anybody else doing this in your area? I don't know of anyone sharpening knives in Phili. Some of the machines you can buy for shears offer a few day course. I would at least do that, and more. I work out of a Sprinter van, but most shear sharpeners I see can operate put of a small compact car. They're tools and equipment are all bundled together on a cart that they set up in the salon.
You can call me if you like. Just email me your number, or you can find my number listed when you google my business SharpRite

That’s a cool story and I’m happy to hear of your success. I personally used to have a major passion for salt water reef aquariums and was in the business for about 5 years until I was toatally burned out. Haven’t had a aquarium for over 10 years. I see sharpening as my new aquarium hobby, relaxing and enjoyable and would like to keep t that way.

I sharpened friends and family’s knives for free until word got around and people started giving me more work than I wanted. Now I charge. Last week I did about 18 knives, 12 kitchen edges and restorations and about 6 folders. Benchmade and CRKT and Kershaw. This past couple of months I have played with the idea of doing it part time as a “subsidized hobby,” if you will. I still haven’t figured out how I’m going to get steady work without being overloaded. I figure about 20 knives a week would be plenty. Still be fun and enjoyable and I would be able to buy more knives and sharpening equipment. Anyway, you are an inspiration keep doing what you love.

I'm slowly in the process of shrinking my equipment footprint so it will fit either on a counter/table top or in the back of my Town and Country. Almost ready for a trial run, but have so much other stuff going on in my life I'm not sure how I'll find time to look for work.

I bought a Nissan NV200 ,its a small van.I would have preferred a Sprinter, but went for the Gas Mileage and easier Parking.I have spoken with a guy that sells the ookami gold system and he does training on Facetime.I may go that Route.I am planning on concentrating on Shears and Knives.I plan on moving to Rehoboth Beach for retirement in 3 years and this will be my retirement job,and I think those 2 things will keep me as busy as I want to be,and not interfere with my Fishing and Crabbing in the Summertime.Bazzle,I will call you, just a few questions. Thanks so much I appreciate it.
