I'm guessing that they are some type of finger choil for choking up on the blade. You'd probably have to ask Duane Dieter to be sure though.
Practical? Maybe,...maybe not!

Nice looking? To each his own, but I like it.
Would have to handle it to be sure though.

They are blade catchers for blade on blade fighting. If any of you guys are familiar with James Keating's knife methods, I imagine this is what they are for. Interesting stuff.

I had the opportunity to handle this knife at the 2001 SHOT Show and it is an amazing piece of cutlery. It feels great in the hand. Excellent balance and your hand will find about twenty different comfortable positions and grips. It is, likewise, typical of all of MOD's pieces in so far as it is a machining marvel.
