Has anyone had any success in modifying their JYD II and G10 Speed Bump (the $40 one) to a tip up carry? I cant really afford to send it in to have it done and prefer to work on my own stuff any how, but I don't want to just jump in and start drilling holes. Thanks

I've wanted to change the the clip on my JYD2 to tip up carry with a different clip as well. I haven't been able to figure out what size and pitch screws Kershaw uses.

Some on here have just drilled into the G10 and attached to it. It don't know how that has worked for them, but I don't feel that is a good long term fix.

If any one knows what size tap and drill bit are need please let us all know.

there is a "do it yourself" hard ware store a few towns over and I was impressed on the amount of bolt/head/thread patterns available. there weas 1 isle, a long isle of them. Thinking I might head down there, the head is a T6 but dont know the threads. One guy said he used a ZT clip on his jyd but I like the jyd clip.

Send a message to STR (STR's backyard knife works) STR@bladeforums.com and he should know :) Steve's a terrifically helpful guy.

Only need to drill one hole,if you use STR's Ti lowrider clip...can use one of the existing scale holes....ask STR for a couple longer screws...not sure what size drill bit; would hafta ask Jeff @ 4bushweaponsrefinishingsystems- he did mine.

This tip-up modification, plus the Cerakoting has quadrupled the value of my $40 Speed Bump; at least IMO!

Here it is,in post #129:

Hope this helps,

2-56 is the clip screw size, you can tap and thread g-10.........however being the clip is used as much as it is im unsure how long it would last either, tap through liner if possible potential, drill size is 50 for 2-56, get long screws and grind down to size. micrometer helps!! GHaile

Thanks for the help guys, it is greatly appreciated. I sent STR an email.

I modded my JYD2 to tip up ,I just went to the hardware and looked at the smallest tap and drill they had and got an extra drill bit (I heard they break easy) . I drilled three holes in the liner and used an old benchmade clip and some hex socket head screws the same size and pitch as the tap . The only things I can say about it is it made me LOVE the JYD2 and it was pretty easy ,I would use a drill press if you can and keep the liner cool or it will get harder and harder to drill through. Good luck.

You don't necessarily have to use 2-56. You can use pretty much any small size screw that might be easier to drill/tap. Just a suggestion..

ZT clip on a JYD2 and a G10 Needswork. The Nw drilled and tapped easily but the JYD was took 3 bits.

They both carry much better IMO. And the JYD just looks better without the "bat clip". :)

Holy crap presz, those looks awesome! Great job! That really makes me reconsider buying a JYDii.

Get one! It makes the JYD II useable for me now. I have had them for years but never carried much because of the "bat clip" and tip down. The ZT clip makes it the perfect knife now.

They need this clip from the factory, and keep it black.

Presz, thanks for the pics, nice to see the finished product. They look awesome

I am going to do this for sure, I am going to try and get my brother to take it to his works machine shop and do it, other wise Ill try to with my un-skilled hands:nevreness:

Would it be better to use a drill press to do this? What kind of bits are needed to drill through the liners?

Yes I am sure a drill press would be much better. But I didn't use one, just a cordless handheld drill.

The 2/56 tap requires a #50 drill bit. I predrilled with 1/16 TI coated and then finished with the #50.

Ace Hardware had a small rack of the wire size bits.

Awesome!
I'd carry my JYDII if it was setup for tip-up carry.
I wish Kershaw would just set these up for tip-up carry in the first place.
