Modded my RAT-3

Hey all,

Well, just last week I became the proud new owner of a Fallkniven F1. I just can't say enough about this knife. It's really a beaut, enough so that it kicked my Rat-3 off my belt when out in the woods.

That being said, I had the RAT lying around with no real niche to fill, so I went at it. I never liked the blade coating on it, so I stripped it off with sandpaper, polished it up to 1200 grit, and added a mustard patina.

Oh, on another note, I used the F1 and the Rat last night to successfully build my first figure-4 deadfall! Whoooeee!

Thanks for looking,

Cool. I'm not a fan of coatings either and usually strip them off. Congrats on the fig 4. I can make them well enough but setting them up can be tricky! You get it almost there... then bam, it all falls. Gets frustrating.

No, I wish I had that kind of talent though! That is made by our own Nick Allen (NWA here on the forums)

I like this method for a dead fall.

String and Toggle Deadfall

Seems to be much easier to setup. Yes it does require you having a bit of string but how many of us don't have some string on us somewhere when in the woods.

Sorry to hijack.

As for the knife, I'm with you, don't like the coatings. Would love to see a clearer pic. Looks good though.

The knife looks very nice. The 1095 RAT 3s I really did not like the coating either. The D2 version had a much better coating.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing to my RAT3. Any chance of seeing some clearer picture?

What blade is that? Looks a bit like an FB Bushcrafter..

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I'll snap a better picture tonight with my real camera and post it after work.

CShepherd, that looks like a really cool deadfall! I know what I'll be doing this weekend... :D

Spooky,

That's actually the second knife I made. I carry it pretty much everyday.

It's been a good one. It has a convex edge. I'm going to thin out the edge a bit sometime. Seems a bit thick.

Definitely give it a try. It's quite easy to rig and seems quite a bit easier to setup.

Ah, the vertical shot helps a lot. Good looking knife, let alone for being #2. Very comfy lookin'.
