So... on all the positive comments from Ankerson and Powernoodle, I picked up a 2010 CS Tri-ad lock knife off our exchange. I'm not a fan of black blades or tantos or clip points... but the handle of the Recon 1 really called to me even though the american lawman had a better blade shape...

I figured for 50 bucks though... I could try to make it into what I want...

This is still a work in progress as I'd like to finish polishing everything, but my hands were tired. Everything is satin finished @1000 grit so far, handles were also sanded down to remove any sharp edges and make the g10 a little less grabby. Blade isn't finished yet, as I want to give it a little less belly... but so far, so good... I'll do a review once I finish my little project... but for 60 dollars new, definitely something people should look at.

Cell phone is all I have at the moment:

I like that alot better! I would go for a little bit less belly. It would also be cool to see have a little more drop on the spine to the point, like the CQC-7 shape tanto.

Nice work:thumbup:

Thanks! I intend to take some more off to make it a little less "tanto" but I don't have a grinder or anything and I don't want to take too much off... so I got it to this point and said... well I'll see if I like it here before I take more off...

Thats a good idea:) Either way, i like it alot better than the way they come from the factory:thumbup:

How do you strip your teflon Zeke? I about wore myself out sanding it... I tried drain-o, oven cleaner, acetone, denatured alcohol, etc.... didn't phase it. So I went to elbow grease...

First Method tried: Goof Off overnight and steel wool...

Then: Peel the teflon off with a SAK then get to work with 320 grit...

The latest set up I am trying looks like this...

Let you know in the morning what we are looking at...the other knife is my TOPS Screaming Eagle aka the Shank, as my friends call it.

The ultralock, steel lined Recon 1 could be diassembled. I'm assuming that the new version can't be?

Zombie Zeke, won't the chemicals do something to the handles?

Hope it works...

In testing now, with no damage to report.

After getting the first layer off with a cloth and brushing with steel brush the teflon coating on the CS has minimal wear, the TOPS is bubbling off nicely...

reapplied both, will let stand until tonight then take another look.

So as not to hijack MyOwnGod's thread if any of you have questions just PM me thanks.

Better Pics now that I finished polishing the backspacer.

Very nice! Now you've done all this with the knife together or did you take it apart. I've stripped & satin finished other knives but they were disassembled.

Any details would be most appreciated.

I took it apart for everything. The back spacer is probably anodized aluminum based on how it reacted to the Drain-O I soaked it in - so that was chemically stripped. Teflon is more of a pain and doesn't react to most chemicals, (i found a few that worked, but didn't have them on hand) - so I just sanded it off using 320 and up. If it werent for the teflon it'd have been 10 times easier. I tried scraping it off using a razor and/or cheapo knife, but anywhere that wasn't flat still had to be sanded. Overall though, I am very pleased. For ~50 bucks and a little elbow grease, I have a "beater" that looks great and has an incredibly strong lock - Hard to beat that.

One last question if I may plz? How'd you do the tanto blade. It looks like you rounded out the sharp point where the bottom edge meets the top.

Was there more to the blade change than that? I plan on doing this very thing myself! :D

I actually wanted to keep the tip moderately thin so it'd be a decent slicer... so I decided the best way to keep the angles right would be to simply sharpen the tip of the knife as it it were a regular blade shape. Rather aggressively since I knew I was taking it down a lot. I started using 320 grit sand paper adhered to a flat surface (on an edge so I could do it easier) and went to town free hand trying to hold my desired angle, after a while I worked my way up to 2k grit and it looked good, so I then gave it an edge sharpening it like you would any other knife and viola!

I'll be honest, I had never done anything like any of this before, and I think i got lucky on how well the spanto came out, but that's how I did it..

How does that thumbstud feel? It looks like it would produce a lot of pressure on your thumb.

Thumbstud feels like any other stud... other than the knife being harder to open than most due to the strength of the spring in the tri-ad. I have no issues with it at all though.
