Modded Recon 1 "Spanto"

I actually wanted to keep the tip moderately thin so it'd be a decent slicer... so I decided the best way to keep the angles right would be to simply sharpen the tip of the knife as it it were a regular blade shape. Rather aggressively since I knew I was taking it down a lot. I started using 320 grit sand paper adhered to a flat surface (on an edge so I could do it easier) and went to town free hand trying to hold my desired angle, after a while I worked my way up to 2k grit and it looked good, so I then gave it an edge sharpening it like you would any other knife and viola!

I'll be honest, I had never done anything like any of this before, and I think i got lucky on how well the spanto came out, but that's how I did it..

Thanks a lot! I appreciate the help and advice. You have a purty pimped out knife there! I hope mine turns out as well. :D

Placing my order in next few minutes!

Sweet, post pics! I'm always up for some new ideas should you come up with any interesting additional touches.

Better than being teflon coated.. ano comes off easy with oven cleaner or drain-o

Hmm, this is interesting...

I was thinking about doing this to my Emerson CQC Super-7w. I was thinking about using the gritted paper wheel to do it, as it proved very effective in grinding new tips onto my knives, and the tip on my 7w is broken off anyways. I assume the general idea is the same, grinding it as though it were a regular drop point knife, but I'm curious to know if the chisel grind will cause any complications.

My Recon 1 Tanto plain edge arrived today. I don't know if I can wait to drive to Home Depot to find that Bix stuff. I have some heavy gray Scotchbrite pads that will take the coating off of about anything.

I think I'll be patient and go for as little elbow grease as possible plus the chemical remover & a wire brush will hit the spots I can't get at. Big fun! :D

Can't really tell thanks to the crappy cell phone camera, but got all the metal bits stonewashed. Surprisingly, the knife is significantly smoother to open now as well, that and scratches won't show up as easy.

How'd you get all the parts to go stone wash from the first pics which have a satin finish. Looks nice!

I have mine about done. I stripped (scraped) the coating of and established an edge. It has somewhat of a stonewash finish.

I'm going to post it and you can advise if you would. I'm not taking it apart again though. :)
