Modding a ZT 0620cf

Hey BF!

I recently purchased a ZT 0620cf, and love everything about it EXCEPT the wave. I mean, I know it's an Emerson collaboration and the wave belongs there, but to me there's much more to the knife than the wave. The CF is beautiful, the action, lockup, build quality, and blade steel/length/shape are second to none. I absolutely love this knife, but the wave just isn't doing anything for me. And besides, this thing would look amazing without the wave.

I'm thinking about having it modded to remove the wave but I wanted to get everyone's opinion before I do so. Here are my concerns:

1. Will I kill any potential resale value? I know it's not a super high end blade, but I'd love to know that others out there would still appreciate it without the wave.

2. Aside from the obvious "wave deployment", will it still operate as amazingly as it does?

3. Cosmetics: will it look as great as I picture it without the wave?

I'm thinking about having Josh at REK do the mod and possibly a regrind to thin it out a bit. Good call or no?

Thanks guys, for listening to my rambling!

I confess that I do not use much the wave feature. However I am not sure if I will pay the same price of a zt0620cf whose wave is removed as without. It all depends on whether the modification makes sense to me and improves the knife.

You won't kill resale value but you won't be adding as much value as it will cost you. If you think you'll keep the knife for awhile and get enjoyment out of it then do it.

I wouldn't necessarily say you'd kill the resale value. However, I think you would definitely maim it.
End of the day it belongs to you. So do what you want with it.

The only problem you may run into is that the wave does double as a thumb ramp. I would advise checking out some of the waveless knives Emerson makes, and have it modded similar to that.

1 I would say yes it will hurt resale. How much, depends on a lot of things but generally your going to take more of a hit than a used unmolested 620 CF.

2. Should operate the same as long as the person doing the work doesn't screw anything up (it happens).

3. If done correctly by a competent person it should look just fine.

I couldn't think of anyone better than Josh to do the job, he does very nice work. I would say if the wave bothers you, do it. I've modded a few knives but do so with no concerns about resale. I know some people are concerned about resale, I buy knives with full intention of never selling them. That doesn't always work out, most of the time if it doesn't work out I give them away.

Not sure where the puppy came from. Lol. It's been years since I posted a pic on a forum. I've reverted to newb status.

I dont think it will really kill the resale value, but most likely people wont want to pay for the mods done to it. It should sell what the others sell for in the secondary market from my experience.

Definatly do what you want, i think it will look good with/without a wave. They are great knives!

It won't kill the resale value necessarily but it will polarize potential customers.

What I mean is for people who want the wave feature they will no longer consider the knife. On the other hand people who wanted this knife without a wave feature will find your knife more desirable. In all reality though modifications such as these usually lower the resale value of a knife somewhat.

Obviously it is your knife and you can do whatever you want with it but may I ask,

Why do you want to remove the wave? Removing the wave doesn't add anything to the knife. If you don't like the wave feature just don't use it. You can use the wave hook as a blade catching mini-quillion for all the knife fights you get into. (that was its original intended purpose) If you want to draw the knife from your pocket without any chance of it waving open just place a finger over the spine of the knife as you withdraw it from your pocket.

My problem I had was the wave wasn't consistent due to my pants having a reinforced pocket. There wasn't a lip for the wave to catch on. Loved the knife though. Sold my first one and had thought about doing the wave removal before selling, just to see if I liked it. Decided against it, but a year later found an awesome prices on a new one. As soon as I got it, I went out on the belt grinder and reshaped that area to remove the wave. I did it a little bit at a time while cooking the area in water. The hardest part was matching the finish. I ended up matching it by hitting it with a well used 600 grit belt. The new belts weren't getting the right scratch pattern.

I don't own this knife but on my kemerson that is 4 inches long its nice to push on this wave with your thumb to direct the blade into an apple for example. I would miss it jimping wise if it was gone.
