Does anybody know why the model 1 has that scalop near the top hilt? I don't know if it serves any purpuse other than add a distinguishing feature. Anyone know it's origin?
Between the model #1' blades with the sharpened upper edge (swedge), from the model #5's that have the same blade grind but come with an unsharpened swedge?...
When I first saw the notch, I thought it was a thumb rest, but that really does'nt make sense.
I later heard a good reason. During W.W, II soldiers were taught to fight with the blade edge up, and rip upwards after a stab. The notch was added so that after the stab, you could use it as a finger groove/leverage point during the ripping action. It also helped during removal.
