Hi there all you Buck forumites!

I am a small-time lockblade folder collector. Top of my line is my Buck Model 112V, of 184 mm overall length, purchased (by me for MY birthday) in February 1993 in the town of Welkom, South Africa. The quality and fine worksmanship of this particular knife has drawn the "oohs" and "aahs" of many a colleague.

Please be so kind as to tell me what the "112V" actually means. Does it possibly refer to some kind of steel? If not, what IS the steel this blade is made from?

Johan,
The 112 is Buck's model number for this knife. It is also known as the Ranger. The V indicates that Buck made the blade in 1989 although the knife could have been assembled in 1990. The steel for that blade is 425 modified.
For more info, see Buck's website at:

Hope this helps.
Larry

Thanks Larry! I did look at the Buck website before asking the question, and I seemed to have missed the answers. (I'll look again.)Your information that the "V" indicates the year date of manufacture of the blade is really exciting.

I have another question (if you please), which I have not seen the answer to in this forum: in what year was manufacture of the Model 112 started?

It was in design in 1971 and real production began in 1972. If you check the Buck Collectors Club section of the website, you can learn a great deal. I would recommend you join the club and ask for copies of old newsletters.
Best wishes,
Larry
