Models made in the USA

I am thinking of getting my first Spyderco knife, however, I wanted to know what, if any, Spyderco knives are made in the US. I really would prefer to get an American made knife over a knife made in China. BTW, the knife I am most interested in is the Delica ZDP-189.

Thanks,
Guilo

The current USA-made models in the Spyderco lineup are:

Military
Paramilitary
Chinook
UKPK
Native
P'kal
Ying/Yang Kitchen Knives

BTW, the newly released Tenacious is the only Spydie that is made in China. The majority of the Spyderco lineup is made in Japan.

If you want a US made knife, you're pretty much limited to S30V steel. All models that use ZDP-189 are made in Seki, Japan. Current US models would include the Native, Military (also available in S90V and D-2), Paramilitary, UK Penknife, Chinook, and Pikal. The T-Mag, Manix, and Mini-Manix were also US made, are recently discontinued, and readily available.

Better look fairly soon. The Sage, which is due out sometime this year, will be S30V but will be built in Taiwan.

As a general rule:

8Cr13MoV = China
VG-10 = Japan
ZDP-189 = Japan
S30V = USA
S90V = USA

Not always guaranteed to be the case though.

The Salsa is made in Taiwan.
All VG 10 and ZDP 189 Spydercos are designed in Golden, Colorado and made by one of three makers in Japan for Spyderco. They have excellent fit and finish and are great values.
All current S30V Spyderco knives are made in Golden, Colorado. The one exception is to be the Sage, made in China or Taiwan but with US steel. The Golden Spyderco knives are usually the cutting edge models no pun intended. If you want US stuff go for an S30V model.
Byrd steel knives are all Chinese.

Depends on what you value in a knife. If ruggedness is you top priority, then by all means concentrate on the US made knives since they are the "toughest" ones Spyderco makes. If fit and finish rate highest, then you'd be better off concentrating on the models made in Italy and Seki City, although the "S" has shown the folks in Taiwan to be quite capable in that department too. If price is your primary concern, the the models from China would be the logical choice.

Ok, thank you all for your help, I have one last question (I think...:D).
Which of the US models are flat ground? I'm not very good at telling from pictures, so any help would be great.

Of the current production US made folders (Military, Paramilitary, Chinook III, UKPK, Native, P'kal) all except the Native are full flat ground. The recently discontinued Manix and 83mm Manix were also US made and full flat ground. You do need to be a bit careful if you're looking for a Chinook to specify the Chinook III, as some dealers may still have the Chinook II, which was not full flat ground, in stock.

I think I'll look into the Paramilitary, Chinook III, and Manix.

Thank you very much.
