Modem Woes.

Ha! Tuesday I could not log on at all. All the possible numbers to my ISP's POP were "busy." Either they were having a denial-of-service hacker attack at Netscape or their equipment was bolixed up. 24 hrs. later, and all was well -- except getting on Yahoo was VERY slow. The Internet is far from a perfect world.

Yeah and *NOT* being able to get online really sucks for those of us who are totally addicted to the Internet!!!!:thumbdn: :(
Like I said in another post, "I got a recorded phone call yesterday that said I would be hooked up to my new Internet service by Tuesday the 20th at 8:00 a.m." We'll see but either way about it when I do finally get totally connected again I will be calling AT&T for an adjustment on my bill.
It will be two weeks Tuesday the 20th evening since I started having the problem and a 2nd level tech told me it would only be a week to ten days.
He also told me that my speed would be nearly double what it is now and that would be nice but just getting online at the speed I have now is satisfying enough, actually dial up would be better than not getting on at all!!!!;) :grumpy: :o

You absolutely want a cable modem and ISP, Yvsa. It's faster than DSL and was cheaper, in my case.

Mike

And that might be what I end up doing anyway if AT&T doesn't get their poop together Mike.:grumpy:
But I was reading somewhere the other day when I was lucky enough to get online that cable might not always be the best way to go. Something about it depending on how much/how often games were played, songs downloaded, videos downloaded, and such.
And unless one of the kids played some games while they have been here AFAIK this computer has never been on a game website. And I don't download music or video so that isn't an issue.
But mostly it's because I hate changing services of any kind and as bad as AT&T can be at times I never did get over being mad at the US Government for breaking up their monopoly.
Before that happened my phone bill was about 5 bux a month and now it is way more than that, then add on Internet service, cell phone, and such and the phone bill is astronomical!!!!:thumbdn: :( :grumpy:

But then again I'm getting to that age where I recall everything being much cheaper when I was a kid. A pack of smokes was a quarter and you could get offbrands like Fatima, Wings, and such for .19 cents a pack. A loaf of bread was .18 cents and ten pounds of taters was a buck twenty or so and ground beef was .39 cents a pound and you could get it on sale at times for .29 cents a pound.
But after all that I finally remember that a buck eighty five an hour wasn't too bad of a wage and if you made four bux and hour you were rich!!!!
So much for the good ol days.;) :grumpy: :o

Yvsa,

If it is only $5.00 more a month, I'd switch. You'll DEFINITELY like cable better than DSL!!!

Alan

Thanks everyone. AT&T finally got everything fixed up to standards and I'm now a happy camper once again.
The DSL is plenty fast enough for what I need as I don't play games and am not a day trader. The upgrade more than doubled my speed!
