Got to do a little hog hunting last night... We came up w/three, two of them went in the freezer.

I used a Rat to skin 'em (safari skinner). I had a LMRS tucked away, but decided to use the Rat instead. (I like those upswept skinners -- still need to find a PBS to try... and my leaner is still sooo pretty ;) )

I did get to use my BM-E -- to stick one and hack through the neck bones.

We hoped for more hogs, but it was definitely a fun night... :D

I REALLY need to try that some time. Looks like you guys had a blast. Congrats on a good hunt

What did/do you use to hunt them with? What cal? And why at night?

I do not see any side arms.... for all sorts of good reasons I think I would have my 1911 at the ready!

Looks cool, fun AND good eats!! Beats the heck out of fiishing! :D  :D

Here's the tools of the trade (at least for last night):

I was shooting a brand new Marlin 444 lever, w/a fixed power 2.75 scout scope -- and I'm in love. We also had an open-sighted Marlin 45/70 guide gun, and a 7mag w/a 3x9 scope. All 3 guns were useful at different distances and different kind of shots. And I did have my 1911 on my hip -- very useful when trying to find a wounded boar in knee-high wet rice fields ( it'd feel even better if it were a 44mag though!)

We were hunting over rice fields at night - because the hogs were moving then. The rice farmer is glad to use us as exterminators. So we were "redneck hunting" from a truck w/spots

We met a super nice game warden in the process :D

Thanks for the info - excellent pics.

If you evey want some help let me know this looks like fun!

Nice equipment too!

Great fun man! My buddy has tried to get me to go out and hog hunt with him the last couple years. I think I need to do it now. Thanks for sharing!

Xaman,

Very cool pics!!! Can you give me a review of the performance of the Safari Skinner on how it handled the task of butchering your catch???

Thanks,
rjd

RJD,

I really love the Safari Skinner. I'm a fan of big-bellied blades for skinning (unless I was trying to be extra careful on a rare skin -- then I'd avoid the pointed tip in favor of a drop point.) But somehow that handle/blade combo fits me like a glove. It just feels really natural to grab it, even when wet/bloody fingered. I'm still going to eventually pick up a pork belly skinner to try out though...

I have 2 of them in d2, they were a bit rough on the edge at first, but nothing a sharpmaker couldn't handle. Now they work great. Hogs will dull a blade really quick! They have super thick skin and super course hair matted in mud/sand. It's like cutting carboard covered with sandpaper :barf: -- tough on an edge. But the SR D2 holds up really well -- especially when compared to my buddies' buck/shrade carbons. By the end of 1 hog, I'm ready for a few passes on the sharpmaker, but that's saying a lot (especially considering my sloppiness.)

i love the safari skinner

Xaman,

Thanks alot for the review. I just bought one on the exchange and I can't wait to try it out!!!

Where's MBWireNut?

He's the man to hunt w/dogs and knives

I'm looking very much forward to trying it w/o the rifle! But in this case, the farmer isn't interested in letting us out in his rice fields to TRY and get close enough to one to kill --- he wants them slaughtered. He was hoping for 10 or more last night.

Bring on the INFI Boar Spear!

sweet hog pics and nice gear!

Xaman,

Where are you guys doing this? South Carolina has a big feral hog population. I used to worry about getting in the way of one when I was deer hunting in the Francis Marion forest.

They're not an issue in Idaho....

Still a gret job and always worth it when you come back with something. Great Job! Xaman I should be in the San Antonio area here very soon, I will let you know some better details soon. If you are also willing to come up here we have some that are 4-500 LBS and lots of them. There are some great guys with dogs and all that we can go with, just need a week or teo notice.

Great picture xaman. :D

I just love piggin’ at night.:D it beats running around in the hot sun any day. :D
Ian.
