Folks,

I've been around here since BladeForums was first created and was honored to share moderator duties with James Mattis.

Unfortunately during the last 6 to 9 months or so other obligations have had the effect of severely limiting my time here. Exacerbating this were sporadic computer problems and the ever present limitations associated with twisted copper pairs in my neighborhood (limits me to a 21.6k normal connection and I'm still 18 months away from fiber optics being installed).

So I was extremely gratified to see management appoint new moderators who will undoubtedly be able to assist much more effectively than I have been of late.

You all have been great and I truely miss the fun of volumous participation. I'm not gone, just not as ever-present as in the past. I still hope to be able to make significant contributions in the future.

Ya'll take care,

Bob Allman aka "bald1"

Bob,
I have always appreciated your contributions. Hats off to you for your excellent service.

Be sure to stay in touch.

Bob, it was actually an error of omission rather than anything deliberate - I just forgot to add you back in as a moderator.

The job is still yours if you would like it, however, on the other hand, I can understand if you would like to decline this offer - we all find ourselves growing short of time these days.

Regardless, I'd like to give you my heartfelt thanks for contributing so much to the growth of the forums and for being such a great part of the team for the past 2 years. You've done a good job and whichever your choice is, we were happy to have you with us.

Congratulations.

Strider, it was an error of ommission more than anything else. Spark promised to move the last few days of threads from the old general forum (now archive#3) to the new forum. He was pressed for time, so I offered to help move threads the other day (see my thread in the Service and Support forum). I posted yesterday telling Spark I was done moving threads (I transfered about 80 threads back to the new general forum) and said that he could remove my moderator powers from both general forum archive#3 and the general forum. Neither Spark or Mike have asked me to do this job. I see the current situation more as an accident than anything else. And no good deed ever goes unpunished

I am willing to Try and moderate the general forum. I do not know that I am sufficiently skilled to be effective, but I do love this forum (all of BFC) and would be happy to help out. It's really up to Spark and Mike and All of you out there. I can not be what James Mattis was. I can only be myself, and try to be as fair as I know how. I do think some moderately aggressive moderation is called for in the general forum from time to time.

Being a moderator of the general forum is a tough job. So it's up to Spark and Mike. If they would like me to do the job, I will try to do it well. If not, I hope they can find someone else soon willing and able to perform this necessary function. If Bob wants to stay on as moderator of this forum, it's fine with me. I appreciate his past efforts and hope he can find the time to be a little more active in the future.

I have a tendency to make fun of folks taking themselves too seriously and like to point out absurdity when I see it. I know that my sense of humor has made some people angry with me at times. I am often misunderstood. But I have never received nasty or hostile email and generally manage to stay out of the middle of fights. I do speak my mind however and can not agree with everyone all the time.

If anyone has an issue with me attempting to moderate the general forum, please speak up. I don't particularly want the job (the pay is lousy), but I Do want to see BFC continue to be a fun place for all of us to share our passion and knowledge. I think I can help with that, but I don't have to be a moderator to contribute.

My real name is Brad Hiltbrand. If you email me, you always find that out when I respond. I am not hiding behind my forum tag. It is just the name of my internet persona. But I am a real person, just like Most BFC members.

bald1,

You replied to my very first post here at the forums several months ago and I have enjoyed the ride ever since, Thanks,

Spark,

I certainly appreciate the sentiments. But no question that the General Forum presents the most difficult challenge, timewise, of effective moderating. Given the limitations I've mentioned above, I'd still be willing to try to help out.

But more to the point, this forum demands time, and with James unfortunate passing, we need to add to the moderating team here. Obviously the task of selection vests with you and Mike. I guess the best way for me to put it is that I would be honored to continue but only as say the #3 man in this forum's team. To promise more at this point would be disengenuous. I'll defer to you all.

To the others who have posted:

Again, my warmest appreciation for your comments. After the first year to 18 months I was still up there as among the top posters. With the tremendous growth of BFC and moderating duties, I spent much more time reading and less posting. No question that I benefited

! James loss was tragic to so many. His sage touch here can never be replaced. I only hope that the needed new moderator line up can continue to uphold the standards for wit and deft handling that he so well exhibited.

All the best

Bob

Glad you are able to stay Bob, you have always been a source of knowledge and wisdom.

Bob, we're happy to keep you on the team - nobody can expect to be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Para, barring any objections from anyone, I don't see any problems leaving you as moderator for the General forum as well - I certainly don't have a problem with it.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for other General Forum moderators, please feel free to offer them up - we can have up to 4, so don't be shy.

I think Para is a most wonderful choice. Sorry Para like many gangs, you can join but you cant get out. Moderator you will be. Of course like anyone here I would like to have seen it come under more pleasant circumstances but aside from that I couldnt think of a finer choice. Thanks para for agreeing to do it. I had severe reservations about making the switch from Rec.Knives to here but the wonderful choices in moderators has kept this place lively but in control.

bald1 - I would like to thank you for all that you've done for us here, and I hope you'll still be around, either to moderate (whatever that is) or just to post like the rest of us, when time allows.

Paracelsus - Your sense of humor can be a bit harsh at times, and is liable to misinterpretation by those who don't know you, but I like it that way and you have my vote for moderator. You've shown that you can be a fair mediator and diffuser of arguments when necessary, and when things aren't so wild you spice them up a bit. Good job so far and keep at it.

Brad will do just fine.

I'm both too busy and too controversial

All of the moderators that I have ever been in contact with have been wonderful. Mike and Spark find the best people to moderate these forums and I feel comfortable talking with them if I ever have a concern. All of the moderators out there do outstanding jobs, my hat is off to you guys!!! (I hope that is close to the saying

Bob, thanks for staying on. You've done a great job.
Para, as Alex said you're in. Blood in, blood out.

Yes, James is sorely missed.
Ok, now that the serious stuff is out of the way, for the 4th moderator I'd like to nominate:
Ghostsix
Vamp Gerby(I can call him that)
Gunner
I say first one to show up in a ghillie suit gets the job

Heh. Ghostsix and Gunner sound great, but don't forget Tim Herman!

Some ideas for people you might want to consider for nomination: FullerH, Hoodoo, Marion David Poff, Kodiak PA. Those guys have been around forever and have posts in the millions. There are other good people for the job, but those are just some names that come to mind now.

Paracelsus - I'm certain that you'll make a good moderator for the Blade Discussion Forum. However, I must admit that I concur with Medusaoblongblahblah; your sense of humor can be rather mischievous at times. Personally, I enjoy it, but you'll have to be careful when you go into "moderator mode" and/or deal with newbies.

I agree though that you should "lay the smack down" and do some real moderating in certain situations. It seems like there's been a lot of inappropriate stuff posted lately.

"Just when I think I'm out...THEY PULL ME BACK IN!"

Para, you'll do fine. Nobody's ever said "use humor in moderation" before, but I think the context is a bit different here. Use all of it you want.... there are only a few of us here who get your sense of humor most of the time anyways.

Ya know, with the world being hip deep in an epidemic of political correctness, you would think that you wouldn't need a moderator anywhere, web or otherwise. But hell, if somebody has to do it, so much the better that it is you and not me.

Bob, wish you could be around more, you have always been a source of interesting info and a voice of sanity (as was JKM) when needed.
I know what you mean about time for reading only though. Sometimes I pine for the "old days", when there where only a couple hundred of us, it sure was easier to keep up!
Hope things work out better for you.
Take care,
Brian
