I don't have any real axe to grind in this particular instance (see my reference to Godwin's Law), but offer it as an impartial judgement based on my years of usenet flamewar combat (mostly rec.moto). I am going to risk some wrath here and make this observation:

If the reason given for removing the image is because it "isn't knife related", why do we allow all the pictures of booze? There is a subtle double standard here. It appears that the only criterion is "Mike doesn't like it" and I'm not sure how objective that is, or how I am supposed to know in advance what will or won't pass muster. Understand that limiting this strictly to knives would bore me to tears. I really enjoy some of the off-topic threads that get started. Others get consigned to the bit-bin. Maybe we need to think this through....

Rick - donning nomex and ducking

As far as the booze goes, the big man has posted booze and I sure as heck am not going to tell him he can't. So I will not tell others that they can't. As far as anything else I might edit, if it is something that is done just for the sake of stirring the pot and not really on topic (as is much of what we have seen since last night) and/ or if it is derogatory to one group or another then it is gone. If I wouldn't want my saintly grandmother or my kids to see it, you can bet it isn't going to stay long if I see it. I don't think that is too restrictive, you guys know me pretty well, at least the old timers. I don't over react to much.

I agree some of the off topic stuff is pretty good, but then again it is rarely the case that the good ones go south very often.

Let's see a picture of hitler on a Busse knife forum, yeah that's on topic

The moderators of this forum do a fine job, and I applaud them for it. Moderating an internet forum is not easy, they do it because they were asked to, they get no special benefits and it is not easy. Mike keep up the good work, John and Garth good luck, Jerry just keep doing whatever it is you do (it seems to be working for you ;) )

If you want to see a picture of hitler or any of the other pics that Mike has edited from this forum you can easily find them in about 2 secs on the internet. I appreciate how family friendly this forum is and I don't have a problem with viewing it in the kitchen when my kids are nearby.

:D:D
I don't think a simple image of historical figure, however notorious he may be have been, is something that needs to be hidden from children. They are going to learn all about the guy in school. They had me watching Schindler's List, unedited, in a public school classroom when I was fourteen years old. I don't think anybody is doing a bad job of moderation, but this instance seemed silly to me. It's just my opinion. The post was obviously meant in jest and good humor, and how anybody could have been offended by it is beyond me.

Sometimes it is a tough call, I'm not going to second guess Mike he does a fine job. I've moderated internet forums, including this one for a couple of years, and other for over 5 years. It's not always as easy as you think it is. And just because something was meant in jest doesn't me anything. A lot of things are meant to be humorous but offend others.

I've been a forum administrator/moderator for four years at a different forum, but I'm not trying to argue with anybody. I don't want to contend how you guys run your forum, nor upset anybody with my opinions. I've always had issues with how far people take censorship these days. It's a pet peeve of mine, and it's difficult for me not to spew whatever my thoughts are when I see it happening.

This has nothing to do with my opinon in regards to the picture and this site but as a point of clarification. Children today get very little non PC history anymore. That means very little to no Hitler, Stalin, Mao, or any other bad people that could upset or misdirect them. That means that the horrors that were committed will be for the most part forgotten and terms like "holocaust", "cleansing" and "purges" will be just words as a result. I could go on, but this is not the place.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone either, rather my point is Mike made a decision and I feel he does a good job so I'm not going to disagree with what he did.

I don't necessarily think it is/was censorship, but more keeping Cobalt in line as he tends to try and push the limits. He would probably get his post edited if he posted a picture of a kitten ;)

:D:D

I never saw the pic but I have to agree with Eric & co. There are some on this forum that do things just to get their post edited/ deleted. Then they start whinning because it happened. It's like a kid saying "but I didn't do anything". Everybody knows what is acceptable here and what isn't. If you can't play by the rules then take your ball and go home.

Controling what is posted on your own forum is not censorship. No one has a right to say anything he wants on the other guy's dollar.

Now, telling you what you can, can't, or must post on your own forum, that's censorship.

Whether I agree with a certain action by Mike is totally irrelevant. I am only a guest here. He and Jerry establish the parameters of what is acceptable.
That is the way it should be.
