Modern folder hiding in traditional form?

Hi guys. Hoping to find something pretty specific. Looks more traditional like a buck 110 but more modern. A two handed opener. Meaning nothing that can be opened by wrist flicks or finger flicks. Must need a second hand to open it. But slimmer from scale to scale with a nice wide blade like in a Manix and a fat blade stock 3-4.5mm (If possible)? Must be locking, no slipjoints.. but look slipjoint esque when closed. Something like AG Russells Texas Rangers looking stuff but want something made in America, Japan, Germany etc. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ehh I don't know exactly what you're looking for but I just ordered one of these...

Google "smoke jumper buck 110 lt"
Pretty sweet with CPM-154 at a great price. Free shipping too.

Take a look at the Benchmade Crooked River, they recently came out with the mini version as well. Another possibility is the Benchmade Summit Lake models, they are also available in large or small sizes. They have a somewhat traditional/modern look to them.

You have a lot of criteria to meet, it could be a challenge. You might look at Moki or Fällkniven, maybe Eka or Böker Solingen. A Case Copper Lock or Tribal Lock might suit your needs. I, as well, have had my eye on A.G. Russel's knives for some time, but I can't overcome my bias against...well, never mind. And by the way, his lock backs are easily opened with one hand.

+1 on this. I just got one and it's pretty sweet. You can read the reviews on this forum and elsewhere, and it seems everyone loves it.

Another option, which I also purchased not long ago, is the Case carbon fiber "back pocket" model. Similar in size to the Smoke jumper (+/- 8" overall; 3.5-3.75" blade), it even comes with a nice little leather lanyard. The Smoke jumper is a little beefier, and does come with a carry pouch, while the Case, as the name implies, is meant to be carried bare in the back pocket. However, the Case is a slip joint, so that could be a deal breaker for you. It does have a very strong spring though, and takes a fair amount of effort to open/close.

Last month I bought a Buck 112 with a drop point blade and indigo blue scales.

It's a wonderful knife. It's not as slim as you're looking for , but the blue scales and nickel bolsters give it an updated look , while remaining traditional.

Man the first thing I thought was "AG Russell" but then I read your last sentence.

What about a Nilte Raggio?

I saw in "The Large MART Store" a Buck Spitfire that had a nail nick, instead of the usual hole (at least I think it was a Spitfire). Not sure if it is made in the States or China, but It looks like it was Buck's attempt to make a "law" friendly decent knife. It was fairly cheap, if I recall, somewhere around the $40 CAN mark as well.

Case copperlock.
Enzo Borka has a nail nick, you could remove the thumb stud.
Okapi.
Mercator.
If you watch the second hand market you might be able to find a queen mountain man, kabar coppersmith, or one of GEC's lockbacks like the 72.

Sounds like you want a lockback w/ modern materials and w/o thumb studs, thumb/finger holes, or other OHO mechanism. Does that sum up what you are seeking? What is your preference in regards to pocket clips?

2nd this^^ The Crooked River is one of my all time favorite knives. It can be flicked but is a perfect hybrid of modern and traditional. I would strongly suggest picking one up.

CKF's Veksha? No clue what your budget is, or if this fits the criteria, but it looks like an ultra modernized 110 to me, kind of, haha. I think they're made in China now instead of Russia.. Just read your country of origin stipulation.

I like the Benchmade Crooked River suggestion too, but Benchmades tend to have very easy/smooth actions, which I prefer, but I'm 100% sure they can be opened one handed.

The biggest issue is budget I have found some options from ~$40 to ~$400 so where does your budget sit?

Another Case which at least meets thread title, ....if it had come out immediately opposite (instead of only five years ago) the then new Spyderco Clipit and then linerlocks, they never would have taken off the way they did.

Case Trapper Lock with pocket clip. I was in the thick of those changes, and the new stuff was just ugly compared our work knives of accustomed use. BUT, we bought them due to unbelievable convenience of clipped to handy location rather than buried under toolbox and car keys in bottom of pocket, and miracle of one hand opening and closing while working on something which could not easily be let go of in order to close a knife.

EVERYbody wanted a knife able to be instantly opened, LOCKED open and why the 110 was IT back then, and the one-hand closing was just a miracle.

However, had a nice pretty bone handled single blade silky smooth jack with liner lock and pocket clip been available then, which IS the Case Trapper Lock with pocket clip, all those others NEVER would have gained traction. We valued looks, polished steel and bolsters, while today's buyer thinks sandblasted and painted is "quality", gun or knife. Sad.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I am surprised there were so many opinions and that you all shared. I thought this thread would be just me talking to myself. I appreciate all of you.

Thanks Cashville, thanks for the recommendation but was looking for something else. I’m not all that positive myself what it is to be honest. Look like a traditional, but blade of something more modern.. wide blade..

Thanks TheEdge01, I like the Crooked River but its a one finger opener. Looking for something that requires two hands to open with zero flickability.

Thanks Reitwagen, I am curious what you were going to say. I was about to private message you but looks like I can’t. Thanks for your suggestions but not quite what I was looking for. Maybe a larger blade?

Thanks bobobama. Appreciate the suggestions. Looks nice but yeah definitely need a lock!

Thanks JPD1998. I like the Bucks but the thickness is a no go for me.

Thanks Makael. Thats pretty cool. I am going to check that one out! I am hoping it has a nice wide blade.

Thanks kniferbro. Yeah, the made in China part is a bummer. Bad past experiences so I know seeing it stamped on the blade every time will get to me. That second suggestion, the Nilte Raggio.. looks awesome! I am googling about it now. I’ve never heard of them but I think I might have to pick one up regardless of if I find another in my criteria. It looks pretty cool. Hopefully I can get some good info on it.

Thanks colin.p. Not really my cup of tea though.

Thanks jimmyd1982. Googled all those. Not quite what I was looking for. But that Mountain Man looks pretty cool.

Thanks PirateSeulb. Sounds about right! And a nice wide blade for aesthetic would be great. Almost thinking a modern folder in a traditional sheep’s clothing. No pocket clip needed. Will drop it into my pocket.

Thanks anthonycastorena2014. I like that knife a lot and have it as one that I plan on picking up at some point. But for this criteria, its not quite what I was looking for as its a one handed opening knife. Wanted a two hander.

Thanks McFeeli. That Veksha looks awesome! I am going to research that more too as its way inline with what I was thinking. The made in China is a bummer and deal breaker though. Will check it out more for sure though. Thanks.

Thanks AF. I always looked at the Manly series of knives. I am interested, but it always reminded me of a Para2.

Thanks again PirateSeulb. Budget is open ended. I want a quality piece. I don’t mind spending anything within the numbers you mentioned. I am fine with new CR or Hinderer like prices.

Thanks mtngunr. Looking for something with a bit of a wider blade, with some simple old school appeal.

Minimize, I think that we are on similar quests. I often carry a Buck 112 that I slimmed and modified to a bare head. I also bare headed a Buck 500 and the weight reduction on both makes them much friendlier in the pocket. I've also eye balled the A.G. Russell knives and thought that other manufactures should make knives combining the best of the old school and the new. Case? Buck? Are you listening? The world has enough flippers already.
