How's it going folks?

My Grandfather carries a peanut daily, and I would like to update his carry a little. He has expressed interest in my GECs bit has stated that they are a bit large (Sodbuster and a Moose whittler). Handle material is not set in stone, but natural is highly preferred.

I would like to get him something on the smaller side, peanut, smaller barlow, possibly a small jack?
I can look over the measurements all day long, but seeing a pic of a knife in relation to another, or in hand really puts them in perspective.

What do you all suggest?

You might consider the 14. Only 1/4 inch longer than a standard peanut, available and often thought of as a looker.

GEC 14 (ebony) over Case Peanut

I agree with the 14 but suggest the 2 blade Jack version, it's extra thickness makes sense with a smalleer knife.

There's the 18 Beagle/Coyote but they certainly are small.

How about a 25?

Can't post pix as the P.Bucket is once again going on closed mode:mad:

The Beer Scout/Crown Lifter is not too big, the bone choices are really nice, and it's available.

I'll hold my hand up for the #14 also. Absolutely love mine I have the single blade version in Ebony. I miss placed it and couldn't stand it so I kept a close eye on the exchange for another in Ebony and bought it. I bought another one in the Rotten Banana and bought it but gave it to a friend here on the forum. I really think if he's a fan of the Peanut he will just love the #14. This made me think that I should get a two blade for myself in Ebony of course.

I'm with Will on the Beagle. It's just a little too small for me, but if he likes a peanut, he should love it. If it was 3¼" closed, I'd have a couple of 'em.

#18 I think will be closest to a peanut, #25 if you think he'd like something a little more robust while still quite small carry.

AG Russell Pinched Peanut has modern steel and is close to custom quality. It is pricey, but worth it IMO.

Thanks folks! Much to think of and talk about.
Please keep them coming.

So far the 14 is looking likely, but I am definitely going to be looking into each pattern listed and taking notes!
Thanks again.

Another vote for the #14. It's really a great size. I don't have any comparison pics with a Peanut but here's an in hand shot of a #14 TC Barlow. Peanuts are too small for me but I don't have a problem at all with the #14 even though it's only a little bit bigger.

I took these a while back for another thread. This is a green bone Beagle compared to a green bone Peanut. I prefer the Peanut, honestly.

I recommend the beagle! Here is mine in cocobolo:

Nice solid little knife that won't break the bank or your nails:thumbup:

I like the #14s too, and the #25s

Here's a #22, Peanut-size, but with better ergonomics in my opinion

Another vote for a two blade 14, it's got just enough more handle than the peanut and is better shaped. Easier to grip on to and put some gusto behind it.

I vote small for a small canoe. I think Case call theirs Baby Butter Bean.

Hmm. I am liking that #22.
The 14 can seem a little plain(?), maybe the term is "sheer utilitarian", I don't know...
It is a nice looking pattern, but I think the bit of added flair from the #22s handle and the clip might edge out the #14.

Now to look into that model and hope I don't want one for myself once I do have it in hand (I do love that tall clip).

But the 22 isn't available anywhere that I am aware of???

I wondered this same thing and just bought a micarta beagle off someone on facebook group to try it out. A 14 with a clip coping would be perfect. I do have a 14 TC single blade that I like a lot, had to 2 blades but let them go because two of the same blade doesn't usually do much for me.

Jack I've never had or even handled a #22 but yours looks great and does look like it would be very comfortable in hand.

This is a hard fact that just dawned on me.
I found one in Skunk Acrylic, but that won't do.

If you are interested, shoot me a PM, it may still be available.
