A while back I saw some great swords in this thread:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...erman-Bastard-is-here?p=12167228#post12167228

Ever since, I've been bitten by the bug. I find myself looking through it quite a bit actually, I think it is time to pick up a couple. I am a huge fan of bastard/hand-and-a-half/longswords and true two handed great swords and I think with all my myriad knives, katanas, etc it is beyond time for me to add a few.

After checking out some of the selections mentioned in that thread I have a good idea of what I want (Albion Baron and Duke stand out, as well as AA Durer Bastard Sword) but wanted to request MORE pics and didn't want to post anymore in his thread and derail it from showing off his new GBS.

There were some really great looking swords posted and I'd like to see more. If anyone out there has pictures of Atrim, AA, Ablion, etc swords, please share them as well as any handling/cutting characteristics you may notice. I guess the point of this thread may seem kind of weird; I basically just want to start a discussion (with pics) of modern production western style swords in this subforum.

I would recommend getting over to MyArmoury.com and looking around. Tons of threads with lots of pictures on Atrim, A&A, Albion, and other good swords.

Well I placed my first order for this type of sword. Now the long wait...............

Nice choices. Christian does good work as well.

Already have my place in line with him now as well, looks like I will see the scabbards well before the swords.

I enjoyed looking through the galleries both on Christian's site and his facebook so much I had to order from him.

Got my Duke last week.

Here is my collection... the swords that have reviews have links to said reviews in their names.

NICE DUKE!

Nice choice, glad to see someone do it right their first time. Next thing you know you'll be getting customs.

Alright, my Baron shipped today! Will post some pics when it gets here next week.

Even though this sword is listed at only 6oz heavier than the Duke it was a noticeable difference in the hands which surprised me. The difference though is that it seems to be balanced much closer to your hands which makes it easier to control giving me the strange sensation of the heavier feeling sword being the faster one in the hands.

The Baron has a much "pointier" tip, tapering a lot more after the end of the fuller than the Duke does, which doesn't really taper much at all. I guess the Baron's extra weight comes from the slightly wider base of the blade and less distal taper. I kind of wish I had reversed the colors I ordered them in for some reason now.

Yes, reviews of the two swords will share your feelings and XIIIa vs XIIa types not so hard to understand in differences. Both will differ from a fencing foil (for instance).

In general, most XIIIa swords will have more blade presence than a XIIa but nothing is etched in stone except for some that spend an inordinate amount of time in mental masturbation comparing the mathematics behind sword dynamics. Truly, some do and make a great deal of noise about it.

If someone was handed one sword in their life and expected to make the best use of it, chances are they would not be too concerned about what another sword's properties were unless offered a wide variety of possibilities. What I might be getting at is that many modern sword enthusiasts are spoiled rotten. At that level (as I am) assemble one of each that appeal to you and understand why different swords may feel differently.

Cheers

I have noticed that the later swords seem to be more popular than the earlier swords. Prior to buying anything it was the earlier swords that called out to me the most though. I'm not done by a long shot and am already thinking about my next purchases and in the end hope to have examples from most of the time period.

In no particular order I am already contemplating the following:

Steward (I know this is similar to one I already have but being a bit shorter/lighter I'm interested in checking out its single handed possibilities)
Talhoffer
Crecy
Maximillian or Tyrolean (or maybe even the upcoming ArchDuke since all 3 use the same blade I would just pick which fittings I liked best)
Munich
Viceroy
Hauptmann (interested to see what the final version will look like first, think it will have the same blade as the Gallowglass)

Context is really everything about general feel of any sword I pick up. I will add to spend some time with every sword you add to a collection. As I spend a lot of time with 18th and 19th century swords, I have found a fair variance even within certain types. Somehow I lost track of spending quality time with some of the modern reproductions I still have and in revisiting them, try to go back to the basics and enjoy a given sword for what it has to offer. A for instance would be my returning to a Windlass sword I bought in the late 1990s and it keeps me from spending on higher price options such as A&A or even lesser Del Tin compound hilts.

I think you are headed in a good direction in what you are listing as possibles.

Pace yourself :)
