Maybe I'm not understanding the prompt, but to me, a modern and refined aesthetic would be something futuristic but minimalist. I'm thinking of knives that look modern because of their subtle but unconventional use of contours, but aren't overwrought or full blown sci-fi. Something like these:

What's the knife in the middle?

Without defaming any of the many designers who could as easily be included for imaginative visions of what constitutes a knife, my $0.02 of opinion on modern refinement (minimalistic clean lines & seamlessly flowing design lines) leads me back to originators & innovators like RW Loveless, Ron Lake, and, in spite of the sometimes florid embellishments dressing his work, Michael Walker. I've also admired the tight discipline of Scott Slobodian's execution of classic Japanese designs as being modern in the same sense as the 20th century architects' designs were a reapplication of the stripped down modularity of Japanese houses to modern materials & environments corporate and residential.

We all probably interpret the title differently… for me, it meant beautiful, minimalistic, perfect marriage of form and function. Like this coffee machine in the MOMA:

Here are two of my candidates:

Or these (somebody had to mention a SAK ?):

Timeless. Pretty. Nothing Extra :)

As a modernistic example, I don't know how I managed to forget the Blackie Collins designed river knife from Gerber, with its very clever sheath lock spring channeled into the integral handle. The system is minimalistic in the extreme, but retains streamlined efficiency & function.

The knife is one of mans first tools. Form follows function when discussing tools that will actually be used. Are you asking about some Andy Warhol modern pop art piece that is vaguely a knife? Or a knife with a certain design aesthetic that i am failing to grasp from your breif description?

This is kind of what comes to mind with the phrase you used. Ever since I saw a picture of this knife for the first time, I thought it was one of the best looking production knives I'd ever seen. It's the Custom Knife Factory FIF20.
