Modern Schrade Waldens

I broke down and ordered one..... This particular example is worth the 17.99

It amazes me that they can produce what appears to be a really handsome knife and retail it in the US for that price.
They would have had to have made it for a cost of around 3-4 Dollars.

One wonders what they may be capable of if they spent $15-00 on making it with good quality materials.

Hal,

Perhaps if its not too much trouble you could post one more photo, at your convenience, of the back of the knife with the blades open, specifically showing where the back-springs end and the blades begin to show how these come together??.

Your photographs are 1ST rate, BTW!

Anthony

Thanks Anthony, flattery will get quick response time. I meant to show that picture. Good request. Pics added to my post.

Good observation. I have seen some old Schrades that still walk and talk and have remained tight after 50 or 60 years of use. I'm not a hard user of any knife, and I'm too old for that kind of test. :D

I broke down and ordered one, and took my own pictures. Feels good and heavy, good snap/action, no visible liner and spring gaps (no light showing). The springs are flush when blades opened and closed. Decent grinds and steel. Sharp out of the metal tin it came in. The blades are well centered and no rub. This particular example is worth the 17.99, IMO, if someones wants to experience old patterns. I'd be interested to hear of anyone else has similar or different experience. Be your own judge on looks. I'm pleased with the quality for the price.

As a side note, no country of origin is mentioned, on the knife, or on the storage tin.

thawk,

Thank you so much for that post, that is exactly the kind of info I was hoping for.

Thanks very kindly, Hal.

Just ordered the Dog-Leg Jack version to use to see what these are made of. I am a Hoping she will be about the same decent quality as yours.. We shall see?

I have a lot of China made knives with numerous brandings. some of these have been purchased from sellers in China and are unmarked. Many are of high quality, but so far any "Schrade" marked ones are of lesser quality (by far). These "Schrade Walden" marked ones look like they might be in the higher quality range.
It is easy to discriminate against the Chinese "Schrades" because there is no connection to the real Schrades. But it is a mistake to assume that if made in China, the quality will be poor.
I think the very best production knives are now coming from China. If in doubt check out the Chinese knives that AGR is selling, or look at Paul Chen Hanwei knives. There are many other examples of this high quality work.

"I think the very best production knives are now coming from China"

I  , but this is not my thread. I like the patterns of the S/W posted in this thread, but have seen varying build quality and will pass.

Fellas, we've been down this road enough times already. Let's discuss and critique the knives and leave the country of origin out of it. Read the guidelines if you need further elucidation.

I wholeheartedly agree with that. It just gets old and has been beat to death already..

Let me get us back on track in here with the knife I ordered today that I posted earlier about. Thanks to Hal's kind and informative post with great pictures, I thought I'd try this one to use as an EDC..

I find it interesting that some Schrade Trappers (both large and small) are being made by GEC.

Ed, the "Fire & Ice" "Schrades" came out soon after Schrade USA closed and were quite expensive, but good GEC quality.
My point about value in Chinese knives was not to start up any friction, but to point out that what until recently had been truly low end knives, are now really well made and finished. Some knife lovers may not be aware of this depending on which brand and when it was bought that their experience and therefore opinion, is based on.

this discussion has been beaten to death in numerous threads in this (and other) forums. anyone who has eyes or ears has gotten the message if they want to receive it, or rejected it if they don't. their choice. belaboring the point (ad nauseum) is not going to magically open eyes and ears. i wasn't kidding when i said that it's time to move on. getting your last licks in was not on the table.

Ed,

Wow, I had no idea until your post here. I am assuming that GEC must have previously purchased the 'Schrade Cut.Co' name, the same way Taylor purchased 'Schrade Walden' brand name.. But I'm not certain.

Anyone know what the facts regarding the real deal about GEC and Schrade Cut.Co?

Agreed, Mike!

I am quite excited about receiving mine now. :D

Both knives pictured by Hal and Anthony look to be first rate. Very nice fit and finish on both and the scales on both are well done -- even coloring and jigging.

I don't think GEC owns the "Schrade Cutlery Co." name Anthony. I think whoever owns the name contracted with GEC to make that particular pattern. At any rate, I thought it was interesting.

I've never collected or even owned a Schrade knife and wasn't aware that Scharade Walden was a separate company from Schrade Cutlery Co..

Maybe I ought to pick up one of those new Schrade Walden knives you guys are showing pictures of.

The GEC Knives are a Special Factory Order for Taylor Brands, as Taylor owns the rights to the SCC name.

Thawk! The New Schrade Waldens Look better in the flesh than on the SMKW site. I may put an order in tonight for a few.

Heck, do yourself a favor and pick up one of the originals too. Everybody should own at least one :D
I prefer the look of the Schrade Walden era knives, but the U.S Old Timers are a great knife as well.
