Modern Slipjoints

Arno Bernard is working on a modern materials slipjoint as well.

For JE Made fans, we are getting our allotment from his Zulu run at the end of this week/early next week.
Hey, it's Jordan, my original enabler, lol. ;) I caught your post in the "EDC" thread.

When I see that the employees are picking up certain models, I know that's a sign to pay a little bit of attention. Can't wait to see those Zulus!

I am really excited as well, might blow my summer knife budget on two models from the same maker this month...

The forthcoming Blade Forums traditional (2018) I believe will be a Buck in CPM 154. You might want to check out the threads over there. Things are progressing toward the ordering stage.

So WE put a picture of this prototype slipjoint on their IG four days ago (scheduled to release in December) . I have been interested in getting a slipjoint with a supersteel blade, but I haven't see any yet. However, someone commented that several companies have been making modern slipjoints? Anyone know of any being made with super steel? Maybe I'm just oblivious.

The link is broken. I've added it here. It's a very nice looking knife, apart from the recurve.

I’ve always got an example of each of these on me in addition to a locking folder or two:
  • LionSteel Roundhead/Shuffler/Dom with M390  - These are the best thing going for the money in a slipjoint right now in my opinion. I’ve got a small collection of GECs but I’d take a LionSteel any day for actual carry use.
  • Hinderer Slippy with CPM-20CV :thumbsup: - I like these MUCH more than I thought I would. I just got a stonewashed spanto with blue scales yesterday but no photos yet. I do feel they are a bit expensive at MSRP though. I got both of mine with eBay coupon codes over the past few weeks, the first one for well under $200.

Fox makes the Gentleman's folder which is a thin liner lock slipjoint in N690 (similar to 440C they say). No clip. I have one and it's a nice knife.

Excellent thread! Due to legal reasons (living in Germany) I do prefer slipjoint knives. So I really like those modern/modern offering but also the traditional pattern modern materials approach.

Pomsbz, thanks for reposting the picture. I completely agree with you, that recurve could be a deal breaker. Some great photos of the lionsteel slipjoints. M390 and some traditional looking handles--definitely going to look around for more releases of those. I'll also be checking out DLT when the J.E. Made's come in.

I hope this trend catches on like the frame lock flippers did. I love my moderns, and I love my traditionals. Most days for me it's a tough choice deciding what'll ride in my pocket. I'm a one knife type of guy, almost always in the right front pocket of my jeans/shorts, so I never carry one of each at a time(maybe I should start). That's the great thing with these, you get the best of both worlds.

Modern traditional knives may start taking up a large section of my knife collection. I know I still have a hope of getting one sporting CPM CruWear. To me, that steel needs a platform like the modern traditionals.

I had a LionSteel Shuffler for a while. Really nice knife, well put together, and looked great. I sold it because I prefer the Roundhead and never carried the it but would recommend all three of LionSteel slips to a friend.

Roundhead is my favorite of the three too. I’ve reserved a bone micarta from the batch that should release this month. Once it arrives I might sell my daily-carry Shuffler and replace it with that.

Lionsteel and Viper Cutlery are killing it with modern materials and a slip joint.

The current DOM offering is the best made yet, IMO.

There’s others such as the CRK, Hinderer, and etc., but the Lionsteel Barlows are the closest to OG slipjoints.

Completely agree. The Dom is an absolute perfect knife and easily my favorite run too of the 3. And the Viper EO are extremely nice and great to hold, I really appreciat them. I have been carrying the viper more than anything since they came out, because it's new, fun and great. Really happy with these guys.

Collector knives is on a tear!

kaput kaput I concour. The Viper EO Teardrop was my favorite out of all of them until the DOM. The Viper EO is so light and easy to use. I enjoy the constitution more than any other traditional but it’s still not my favorite. This also could me be lying to myself, because of all the carbon more traditional construction slippies I own.

I'm kinda curious, what the largest slipjoint knife out there? Production and perhaps custom too, in terms of blade length/overall length.

Two that come to mind...

Schrade 858.....3.5”blade,8” oal
Great Eastern 98...... 3.75” blade, 8.5”oal
