Hi guys, im trying to find some steel between 0.9 and 1.2 % of C. i want something like W2, but is really hard to find it. Someone know other steel with specs similar to W2?

from where can i order CruforgeV? i would like to order from the manufacturer, because im in Argentina and need to import that steel.

Cruforge V is not close to W2 at all. It started out that way but much more manganese and vanadium were added. Not a good choice for hamon, too deep hardening.

W1 is the closest steel available to W2 but has no vanadium. Good hamon potential though.

Don Hanson (see above) has been the go to guy around here for W2. He sells it in around 2" diameter rod about 12" lengths. As I recall they're about $40US each. If you don't have the means to forge and hydraulic press or power hammer them down to knife size, he has a connection that will do it for you for, as I recall, about that much again in cost. Two of the rods (up to 20 pounds) should be able to be shipped to you internationally via USPS flat rate priority mail for approximately $20US.

This is all by supposition and recollection. Check in with Don for accurate info.

I didn't know W1 was that close to W2. W1 is available commercially. Don't know much about it otherwise. Does anyone else have more info on this steel?

There is a very basic data sheet on my website that Stacy posted earlier in the thread. My understanding is that W2 has more carbon and vanadium and less tungston than W1.

Dave, W1 is a fine blade steel and good for hamon, but W2 is a good bit better.

Heat treating for W1 is same as 1095 and very close to W2.

Thanks Don, I'll have to try some W1. Right now, I'm getting pretty good results, hamon wise, from 1075.

Nathan, I've tried, and tried, to read those data sheets. Never could really make a lot of sense out of them.

Is drill rod good for forging? I saw Enco had both their O1 and W1 on sale and a free shipping coupon for April. If it's good stuff, I'd like to try a stick or two with my next order.

Drill rod is excellent for forging, both W1 and 01. W1 will be easier to deal with because of less alloy.

What Don said :)

I've used a bunch of Enco drill rod (both W1 and O1) and it's nice, clean steel. The W1 is definitely much easier to work with, but O1 is a heck of a cutter too. :)

The thing I like about drill rod going on sale is it's great to have a couple pieces of small diameter stuff to make punches and chisels with.

that kind of steel will be good for SEN (the one that are used for japanese bladesmiths) right?
