I have both the Black and the Desert BK-9 Knives from Becker, so I did some modifications today. I took the Desert slabs off the Desert BK-9 and put them on the Black one, Man does it look sharp! Then I put the knife in the desert sheath and it looks really good because the desert sheath is outlined in black so now this black BK-9 with the Desert slabs matches the sheath!

As far as the desert knife, well it looks OK! with the black slabs on it but looks funny in the OD sheath of the Black BK-9.

If Becker was smart, they would offer their knives in different slab colors, looks so much better!

Sorta like this?

Folsom did this in April of '04 and seemed to really like it... read the thread:

Several people on the Camillus forum have been trying to get the factory to sell a la carte micarta slabs that they are using on the Becker Extreme BK7 blade... no luck as far as I know.

Yes my BK-9 looks just like the one in the photo! the other good thing is I also have the desert sheath and it is outlined in black so it looks really cool.

I was on the verge of selling both of them until I made these modifications but now I am going to keep my new BK-9.

I am going to say good by to the desert blade with the black slabs though! Just does not look good. I think someone could use it for a Bitch knife just to trash or do hard jobs with.

Brian,
I am sure with your skills you could make any handle material you wanted for a Becker!!

Seriously, It would be great if Cammilus would just sell the Micarta scales.

RickJ - EMail me if you decide to sell the one off cheap as a Bitch Blade :)

I actually plan on giving the other BK-9 away as a freebee with some knives I plan on selling, I will be listing them on the Exchange within a few days. It is time for knife spring cleaning!!! A little late I know!

Paddling Man,

How did you insert the photo, I am now a platnuim member but can't.

Thanks,

Rickj

The black coating on my BK10 started to look tatty with lots of scratches from use so I stripped it down to the bare metal and then polished it up on my water stones

I also reprofilled the edge to a convex. I think it looks a lot better now and much easrier to keep clean :D

Very nice! I think some nice green micarta scales would look great on there.

Stevie,
That looks fantastic! I have never polished a knife blade using water stones, only sandpaper. Is using waterstones very time consuming?

I'll bet the knife performs better now as well.

Can anyone post a short, one-paragraph reply to describe "waterstones"?

Thanks!

There carry two kinds of water stones: natural stones, and man-made stones. Man-made stones are made by compressing abrasive powder such as powdered clay, ceramic or stone and binding these ingredients together with the use of an adhesive. Natural stones were made during geological stratification and compression taking million of years. Their main ingredient is volcanic ash that formed sedimentary rock beneath the ocean floor before being uplifted during the movement of tectonic plates.

Unlike other stones, both are used with water instead of oil. The difference between a natural stone and a man-made one is similar to the difference between a natural and an industrial diamond. The man-made stones ones cost about £15 each, I have seen them asking £1,500 for a natural one!

Wow! I'm definitely going to have to "google up" some info and try this out after looking at the results of that job!

Thanks for the info AND nice job!
