Modified Ontario Machete - Lots of Pics

Excellent job! I love the detailed photos. Thanks a bunch for sharing.

Great job!

Man, I'm gonna have to get something like that. Doing Scandi grinds freehand is a pain in the arse!

Thanks all for all the feedback.

what caused the different coating pattern on the portion of the blade closer to the handle?

The coating pattern is different because near the handle, the blade is just flat. As you get part way into my scandi grind, there is a high flat grind for the original blade shape from the manufacturer.

In order to not have that coating change, I would have had to push my scandi grind further out away from the handle. I didn't want to do that, and take up more room. I did not think it would effect performance at all and the location is where I wanted.

I hope that is making sense :D

What kind of machetes do you guys have? The reason I picked the CT1 for modifying is that it is a bit thicker than most, allowing for a more convex edge. Although, this can be done with any.....but I am just curious.

I have 2 Linders--very thick

Will you do that to them???

Nothing 'with' the handle. I just like handle work, as you know.

Edited to add. I thought that kmg looked new. I remembered the conversations too.

Save for the rotary platten. Its the bees knees for convex edges.

Great job Brian.

Let us know how that bad boy performs would you? :)

Nice job Brian....

Will those modified machetes be available at your online store ?

The idea of the scandi grind is interesting, but I'm not sure I like it blending way into the main edge like that. I wonder if it would still be effective if it was shorter, contained entirely within that short section between the main edge and the handle? I think you could get it about 1-1/2" long there.

Fantastic job there Bryan. I used to have photos of girls on my desktop but now I have a KMG grinder. I literally lust after that thing but when you see what HornDog can do with a little HF 30$ grinder it makes you realize it is really the guy using it.

I still want one though.

I am going to go take a shot with the old Norton right now.

That is a good idea. I measured it, and 1 1/2" section would work. However, it would be tough for me to do. I did this with a 2" belt sander. The platen on my 1" belt sander would not work well for this.

I could probably do 1 1/2" convex in that section (thinner convex that the rest of the blade).

I will have to think on that. However, I do like have the long section of scandi for cutting stuff.

The two machetes I've beat the crap out of have very little use on that sharpened area a few inches from the handle...the brunt of work is the last half of the blade. The scandi grind makes great sense if you plan to have a do-all large blade and I really like it. I'm very interested Brian! I'll shoot you an email if you'll modify mine:D

OK, I'll admit I've got grinder envy.

IMO that blade turned out fantastic. In Brazil I only have hand tools to work with and mine don't come out looking that pretty. They work just fine but they don't have nearly the class and professionalism of the blade in your photos. I mean it when I say that I could not have done a better job of it, even give the same tools.

If you don't mind I'd like to reference this thread on my video as it really does illustrate the process very well. I get alot of questions about the mods from that video. The bottom line answer I end up telling people is, "Look, you really don't want to see how I do this or you'd get discouraged."

The mods I put on my blades came about as an evolutionary process of repeated sharpening. The fronts just kept getting more and more convexed and the bases more and more scandified. I found myself not liking new machetes because of it until I took a good look at my old ones to figure out why I preferred them so much.

You did a great job with it. I'd pack that machete in a heartbeat. Mac

Just in case anyone missed the video version explaining the reasoning behind these mods MACHETE MODIFICATIONS FOR THE BUSH

Very useful mods, I especially like the scandi section. Great job and thanks for the pics :)
Looks like I have some work to do on my Legitimus.

By all means, please do. There is no greater compliment than what you have said. After all, it was your idea I was trying to re-create.
