Modified Ontario Raider Bowie

Excellent!
It's great to see more DIY posts here.

With hand skills like that a sheath would be a piece of cake for you.
Go for it!

GREAT JOB !!! I also have one. Love it just the way it is. Yours now looks as if it were a Mountain mans knife. Great work. It is a GREAT blade for mods.

Sorry to bring up an older thread...but wanted to say it looks very nice, and also ask just how useful do you (or anyone with this knife) find this knife to be?

Is it more of a toy, thats cool to look at and handle, or do you find it a useful tool in the field? I would think that a blade that is thinner would be more "machete like" and thus better at clearing bush. I keep resisting the urge to buy one even though i am very attracted to it shape, based on my findings that a smaller knife "works" better than a larger one, when a long blade is needed its usually a machete or similar blade that works the best, and not just a scaled up knife.

Again, love the look and the new handle really works for it.

It is a useful knife, not so much for clearing brush, but as a chopper and splitter.

A monster of a knife, I love mine, it can take some serious abuse and excels as a chopper due to it's weight. Best Bowie for the price in my humble opinion.

Thanks for the praise of my project. I'm real happy with it.
In response to RDog, my initial reason for wanting this knife is simple and non-practical: I like weapons. I have more practical weapons available but I still get childlike satisfaction from smashing, chopping and cutting stuff. Some other people on this board can relate, no doubt. After carrying the knife on short hikes around my farm property, I have found it to be quite a practical tool. I can do hatchet and to a lesser degree machete work on the spot without going back to get the bigger more cumbersome tools. With the new sheath, the knife rides high and tight and really doesn't get in the way until needed. Also, if the indians attack and my musket is wet, it could come in handy as a weapon (haha).
Thanks,
Rhino

That looks very nice.
Just one question though.
Do you remember if the tang was cut a sharp 90* angle where the tang and blade meets?
Now i have seen a few cold steel trail masters break right at the transition from tang to blade. And don´t want that to happen to my sp10.
I have never heard of a sp10 marine raider break though.

Rhino,
I have an sp18 I'm considering a bone or antler handle project on...how did you get the original handle off and how hard was it?

If the handle design is the same then removal can be had by drilling out one side of the brass retainer that serves as the lanyard hole.

I love it, nice job!

I have the knife and love it. Great knife but the sheath that comes with it is nothing to write about. I love that sheath, where did you get it? I want to pick one up. Thanks!

jgn- The transition from blade to tang was hidden by the guard- the coating would have made removing the guard difficult so I didn't.
DCF69- Charlie_k is correct.
charlesbjr- I got the sheath from that big "A" website that originally sold books. The fit was too tight and I eventually cut through the leather while re-sheathing. I got a custom leather sheath for it now which is great.
