I want to modify the jaws of my Tom's Tongs.
I'll have to heat up to some forging temp so I can move the metal.

What heat treat procedure (if any) is suggested after I'm done with the forging modifications?

thanks

You are almost certainly going to be mild steel, probably 1010 or 1018. If you use anything with more carbon "say like 1045" they would start to harden in use and could snap. There arent really any HT you need to do with them at all. Heat them up, bang on them and just leave them in open air or on a welding table to cool

Just let them cool off after all forging and clean them up.

It is easiest to grind off the old rivet, make the changes, and put in a new rivet.
