modifying folders to automatics

Here's the situation:

I bought a Boker Plus Jim Wagner Reality Based folder BO051 a while back and had a quality issue that resulted in a new replacement of the same knife. I bought this knife around 8 months back solely for it's tactical uses--the huge glass breaker at the pommel, in my opinion, makes for a great skull basher, and the knife allows for various types of gripping styles. Plus it's cheap, which diminishes any hesitation about getting rough with it. HOWEVER, there is a problem or 2.

FIRST OFF: The knife is bulky as hell and just doesn't fit well clipped in my pocket, making it hard to get out.

SECOND: It takes forever to open, causing me to lose confidence in using it when I really need to. It feels that when and if I get into a jam, the most I'll get out of it is the use of the glass breaker on pressure points and on some unfortunate's head.

So is there any way I can modify this knife for automatic or assisted opening??

Does anyone know if the newer aluminum handled version is any thinner in width? If so I might as well ebay this unused sucker and get that to modify.

Almost any where in the US you can get a permit to legally carry a handgun. This is a much better defense option than a knife.
Don't know if it can be converted.

No legal handgun carry in CA, they don't recognize it. A friend in NRA is getting a legal carry permit through a Florida program recognized in most states, but not here. Besides, knives are better tools for opening beer bottles and fixing the threads on my shirt with.

I'm not sure what knife you are talking about, but if it carries tip up I can help you with your problem. You just need a "wave" for it. I'll repost in a minute with some details.

Great!!! That knife has a perfect setup for a "wave." :D Now all you need is a dremel with a cutting edge and cut into the part that sticks up next to the thumb disc. Cut towards the "O" and make it turn into a hook or a "wave" to catch the edge of your pocket when you pull it out.

This will automatically deploy everytime you pull it out of your pocket and it is perfectly legal since there aren't any springs attached. A lot cheaper and more simple than making it automatic with omega springs and such stuff.

Here is a link to emersons website, get a basic idea of what the wave looks like and try to hack into that thing sticking up out of your knife ;).

Let me know what you think, J.

Your best bet would be to "wave" it like batosai117 mentioned.

To convert it to auto, it needs to lock closed. You could probably modify a lockback to do this easily enough, but then the release would be lockbar, which I imagine would be really awkward. You'd also need to make a recess for the spring.

If that thumb wheel is screwed on, you could replace it with a bit of curved steel to act as a wave, giving you the option to revert if you don't like it.

I've tried to snag the "wave" part before, but to no avail. I honestly thought that's what it was meant for since I used to have a Cold Steel Ti-Lite that used a similar opening style and worked perfectly, but the knife just didn't seem very knife like (ie whimpy skinny, lets peel an apple--knife like). The thumb stud alteration sounds like a good first step, and if that works well I'll go the extra step into modding the holed part and putting the thumb back on for diverse opening options.

I'll have to practice on an even cheaper knife before I decide to make this Boker an automatic, THANK GOD FOR CHINA!

Thanks all!

try this. it works very well

DONE. And it works. Once again, THANKS ALL! Your willingness to help people makes bf.com a great place for everyone.

Great trick, it worked on my strider/buck 889. I stuck a tie wrap on the hole and it catches everytime.
