Modifying the Fat Battle Mistress

ok here is a question. Why did you do the sand lines along the blade instead of the traditional way of up and down the blade, like the factory busse satins?

Great work by the way. What kind of sander did you use?

For a few reasons....

I did all the sanding by hand.... so if I was sanding in an edge to spine direction... I would have melted away the grind lines.

I used to do it that way...but... I wanted this one to be as clean as possible.

Also, all the "hand rubbed" finishes I have seen are set lengthways... and I've always liked the effect of a seamless satin finish... the full length of the knife. :)

I followed J Neilsons satin finishing guide...

No sander... just sandpaper and a table with a thick piece of glass on it.

isn't it harder to remove the grind lines this way? So by going across the grind lines they come off faster? looks very good. I am not sure which I like better. I'd have to look at both types alongside each other to see. Ban usually does it like that as well, and I was wondering why.

Ah... when I say grind lines... I mean the line where the sabre grind starts.... the transition from flat side to bevel... from the top of the plunge line , along the length of the blade.... not the marks that I had to remove from the steel.

Does that make sense? :)

I'll have to measure the stainless and titanium tubing I use, but I think they are .025" or .035" wall.

Sorry for the slight highjack but I've been looking for titanium tubing in the 1/4" to 5/16", even 3/8" OD with this sort of wall thickness but haven't had any luck. Mind sharing where you picked yours up from?

ok, makes sense now. I always wondered why some knives are done longitudinal while others are done vertical to the spine.

quite impressive! And you also made the sheath?? You're very talented! I'll be lucky if I can even make a lanyard.

Looking good Soup Monger!

I've been thinking about doing the handles on my FBM (black canvas mags) but not sure how it will turn out.

Anyone done their black canvas mags?

this is a stupid question but is the blade coated under the handle slabs?

Been thinking of removing handles myself but don't have the hardware yet to put it back on.

Once again mate, looking good!

Cheers Wald. :)

Yeah... the CG blades are coated from tip to butt before the handles go on.

I think that sanded Black mags would look great.. and I'll be finding out myself when my ASH-1 gets to me.

I did a quick test of the FFBM in the building site that will eventually be my workshop.

This was an old 4" X 4" pressure treated fence post (i.e it has had been treated with preservative)

I chopped directly through a large knot to make sure my edge would hold up.

I think I'll have to take the edge a bit thinner and try it again..... it is very sharp.. but.. it could be sharper.

The new handle shape is very comfortable.

Make it full zero grind, that's what I did with mine. Not convex, not bevel, full flat like a katana. Mine is hairpopping just from the DMT fine diamond, havent even gone to super fine or sapphire let alone stropping it yet.

I'd like to see a photo of your full zero edge. :)
