Here's a modular survival kit I made up from the case of an ALICE IFAK:

All packed up:

Contents:

Top row:
Triangular bandage, bandanna, Bug dope, Katadyn MicroPur tabs (4), pealess Fox 40 Whistle

Middle row:
AMK Heat Sheet, fresnel lens, lensatic compass w/ 2 caribiners

Bottom row:
2 waterproof matchcases w/20 wind/stormproof matches & striker (taped so the matches can't touch the striker surface), tindersticks (work like fatwood, but burn longer), LMF firesteel, Bic

I say this is modular because it goes from kit to kit, hence why certain things are missing. Whther in my daypack or car kit, things like water bottles, poncho, food, FAK are included. This is just stuff that gets used a lot, and the package can be quickly hung off my belt (via paracord loops where the ALICE clips would normally go in the back), or grabbed and thrown in whatever kit I'm using that day.

Are those tinder sticks like the ones that have the match on the end?

I tried the match ones the other day and could not believe how big they burned.

Never tried the ones with matches on the end. Probably the same. If you light a full stick of these, it'll burn for a good 5 minutes and give a pretty good amount of flame off. I usually use 1/4 stick at a time.

love the case! what was its original use?

It was originally an IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) that attached to a pistol belt via ALICE clips. They are pretty cheap at surplus stores.

Looks good. Nice and compact. I like the coglans firesticks quite a bit too. They are very easy to shred for catching a spark and like fatwood are also waterproof.
