Moen Hardcore Knife Jig?

I am hoping someone has some experience with this jig? I’d been talking with Bing about it shortly before he passed away... He spoke highly of it when I mentioned frustrations with some of my bevel grinding. He actually said he wished he’d found the jig earlier on and I could see how he used it when I went down for the folder class. Sadly, that won’t happen and I thought I’d see if anyone here had used one?

From the few videos I’ve seen, it appears to work rather well, but I know things can have a down side. I can’t help but wonder about the post heat treat build up of heat and how one cools it down? With the blade in the fixture, you can’t just dunk it in the bucket... Anyway, figured I’d see if anyone had some thoughts to share. Thanks.

Jeremy

Why can't you just dunk the whole thing in the bucket? Or .... use it on a water cooled belt grinder.

I have seen them before. The ability to swing the blade from side to side is a great asset if you are a jig grinder. I think the high price for a fairly simple jig kept people away.
The drawback is that a jig can't think or adjust. Even with the rotating blade, I bet getting even sides is still more skill and less jig. If you need to change anything, it has to be done, then everything ground before any other adjustment is made.

Interesting, I just went to the website and I couldn’t find what grinders this will work on?? I own a Hardcore & two others.. do you know more ?? Thanks.. Laurence

Thanks for the thoughts, Stacy. I guess the whole thing seemed a little big/awkward to dunk the whole thing, but certainly not impossible. It was just very intruiging at how much Bing thought of it.

Rhino- From what I saw on the site, it’s just the jig that holds the blade and you slide it back and forth on the tool rest.

Thanks I may just call elite machining and get the poop on it from them, And then maybe drive out and see one!

how do you adjust the angle? just by adjusting your work rest? Personally if I were dumping money into a jig it would be for Don Dentz's DD work rest and grinding jig.

Yeah, they’re definitely spendy. I will say that the feature for flipping the blade side to side sure seems nice (vs attaching it then having to take it off and turn it-seems like it could allow for uneven grinds if not careful). And as for the angle, yes it is changed by adjusting the angle of the work rest. If anyone does get their hands on one, I’d be really interested in your thoughts.

Weld together TWO angle iron and you can grind both side ................

I’ve seen the Moen bevel jig and platen used in person at a TKG gathering. Yes it is expensive, but quality does not come cheap. Everything about the jig and platen is top level quality.
Once you clamp the blade in the jig you don’t have to unclamp and flip. The clamp pivots.
If your using the platen as well you don’t have to worry about cooling in water. It’s air cooled.
When i can afford it i plan on buying the platen and jig.

I'm kind of curious as to how they sleep at night charging $300 for that.
It’s air cooled from the back of the platen. The word revolutionary comes to mind. The craftsmanship is beautiful as well. It starts off as a massive chunk of aluminum before it’s machined.

If you saw it in person and how it’s used plus the savings in time and the cost of belts you would save.....you might think differently.

Versus a couple hundred bucks for a water cooled platen? How is the air cooling more effective with regard to belt life and blade temperatures?
