I have a Spire, a Moki-made knife sold under the William Henry label. It's simply the best made factory knife I've ever owned. GEC wishes it made knives this good. The fit is near seamless, the closest to custom I've seen in a production piece. The lock is solid, with no play whatsoever, and it disengages without any stickiness.
Re the AUS8.
IMO AUS8 is the closest I have seen in performance to a "stainless 1095". Very fine grain structure. Just below the level of carbon content where one gets formation of large carbides. Can be hardened to almost 60. Dinkum alloy for certain.
I have AUS8 blades in several of my knives (SOG Stingray and Kershaw 1050 Folding Hunter come to mind) and they are great performers. They easily sharpen to a keen edge, hold that edge for some time, and do not chip with hard use.
Im really enjoying this thread. I havent looked into these, but will now.
I always enjoy reading conversations on steel and am thankful for the knowledge you guys have. It seems I can always count on Ed and Frank for having user based knowledge.
I have read threads on these steels before but not on a traditional knife.
Thanks again
