hello all, havent been around much but i know i will get some good info from you guys on this.

i am currently at VCU studying art in the craft/material studies department concentrating in metals and glass. next semester i am going to be doing an independent study in mokume gane. i have limited resources here, the 2 main profs dont do MG and only one of the grad students and one adjunct instructor do it and the adjunct may not teach next semester in the c/ms department.

i saw a good demo from them today and got a few recommendations on books.

but my request to everyone here is what are good resources to use (mostly in book or electronic form) to help me along.

for the torque plates i plan to use 1/2-3/4 stainless steel and am planing to use rather short thick bolts to torque it down and im probably going to try to get wing nuts or weld on wings to the nuts so that i can quickly remove the billet from the plates. i also am planing to make the plates with no handles so i can just use tongs to move it and to allow me to rotate it in the forge (saw them have an issue today with the back side melting since it got more heat built up on the back side).

as to what i will have to accomplish i will have to make 2 sheets and make something out of one of the sheets. i plan to make one out of brass and copper to turn in and one out of silver and copper or brass. i plan to do a few test billets from copper and brass that are thinner and smaller so that i can get the hang of it more and not spend the money off the bat.

thanks for any info

I have a MG book by Ian Ferguson and another by Steve Midgett.
Get both of these books and you will be well prepared for some time in the shop.

Matt,
give me a call later on this week, thu-sun after 6pm. I do mokume in copper, nickel silver, brass, gold, silver, and palladium and am experimenting with other metals.
Thanks,
Del

ok so its been a while since i put this up, and the semester is going, i have a bunch of fine silver and copper sitting here next to me which i think i will be making a billet with this coming weekend. i will be getting some pics of it hopefully though the process but for sure the end sheet. i got really lucky with this since i am the only person doing this as an independent study i was kinda worried about figuring it all out (i got a lot of great tips and advice from del but you know attempting something ive never done with almost 200$ of metal is stressful) but a few people that took a class that did cover it last semester are helping me and splitting billets/making there own (i am trying to convince one guy i am working with that making smaller individual billets will be better but they did 3X3 last semester yet had a lot of issues with it not laminating fully... dohhh.

so stuff will come soon... hopefully

and a big thanks to del for the long conversation we had back in nov which was a huge help
