Didn't know the handle material was so thick... which is good, but I was more worried abotu wearing notches in the edge and having it come through that way than wearing down the tang... either way I'm talking out of my ass without one in hand to see.
As for the heating with the nail idea, it was recommended to me as a way to drill out larger holes in a jag blade. Heat and soften, drill. Heat again, drill again, repeat as necessary to make the hole big enough... I should have clarified, sorry.
But yeah, the pin cup thing I hadn't addressed... maybe a dremel tool with a carbide bit would do the trick for that, though. Use carbon paper (or something else that would transfer a mark) between the new pin and the handle to mark exactly where the cup needs to be, and cut in, bit by bit...
