I have been carrying the Monarch as an edc for a month or so now, and I am really liking it in that role. I have to admit that I think I'd still prefer the handles of the Bushcrafter, Bushfinger, and KE Bushie if I were doing the long term bushcraft or primitive living type thing and was spending a great amount of time whittling and carving. However is all of the short term uses and holds I have used and am likely to use with a knife in an edc role, I actually prefer the handle of the Monarch. It's not an overly long handle, so it doesn't take up a lot of room or stand out of the pocket a lot, but there is the perfect amount of room between the guard and the down-trun of the pomml swell for all four fingers to get a secure purchase in over-hand and under-hand grips. In a pinch grip, which I use a lot in detail cutting and scraping type uses the upturn of the pommel swell curves around the heal of my palm for a very natural feel. The knife isn't much longer than the Hiking Buddy, if any longer, but the taller handle gives me more control in twisting the blade, and the wider blade gives me more to work with and more lateral strength. I am enjoying using the knife very much in an edc role. I thought I'd post a few photos from the past month.

The Monarch on the fringes of our urban jungle

I really dig the color coordinated Jou Fuu sheath :)

Nice lines, I love the taper and contours.

Excellent fit and finish as usual.

It feels at home in my daily gear as my phone, my laptop, my ever present flashlight, and of course my coffee...

It has handled snacks and lunches in the park very well.

The fact that the near by urban center is much like any other in the US, and elsewhere I imagine, is one of the reasons for liking the feel of this knife in an overhand grip. With it being the larger of the two knives on my person, and the easiest to deploy, it would be the primary tool chosen for the defensive role if push came to shove and the situation deteriorated that far.

I feel more comfortable having this knife in this role considering the fact that, while a CCW will allow you to legally carry a side arm into a place that serves alcohol, but as of yet it is still illegal to carry in our local city parks even with a permit. Also considering the time of day I am usually in the area.

And, under much cheerier circumstances, the Monarch also handles and evening meal quite well :)

Very nice! It looks like a right handy size. Alas, even that would be illegal for me to carry here as EDC. Its odd to me taht North Carolina has such strict laws on fixed blades.

Love the write up as always! I am beginning to understand the whole "I-ended-getting-this-knife-because-of-Mist" narrative that floats around this forum. This post definitely makes me more interested in a Monarch.

I do have a question though that is probably answered by common knowledge. What is it that brings you to those areas at night?

Totally agree on this for sure!

Great post (as always) Brian!

Dude, i love my esquire and i love my BC. this seems like an amalgamation and the more you keep hyping it up, the more i feel i need one.

Great stuff!

Very nice write up Mist. Really like the pics with all the little lights on and the reflection in the river.

Great review Brian and love the photos. I agree about the monarch as an EDC. I use mine one of mine in that rolw and have been quite pleased with it. It is just enough knife for that role without being overly intimidating.

I just scored the Monarch with racing stripes and I can't wait to take it 'out and about' :) . . . o hold on, of course I'll have to wait! It will be several months till I can walk around with it. Boo! Meanwhile I'll have to live vicariously through you and your pics!

Thank you! Yeah, some places tend to have very restrictive knife laws...best if I avoid most of those :)

Thank you! Yeah, I don't make them, I just use them, take pics,m and talk about them :)

Mainly it has ever been about exploring an artistic avenue. The woods are rather boring to photograph here during the winter unless there is ice or snow, and I have been asked to produce some urban art by a friend of mine so I go out at night and shoot photos of the city and the lights, partly as recreation and partly as a professional endeavor.

Thank you will! :)

Thanks man! It is pretty much a larger beefier Esquire. If you love the Esquire, chances are you will like the Monarch as well.

Thank you Preston, I am glad you enjoyed it :)

Thank you Bill, my thoughts too, good size to be useful, not too intimidating, but just the right amount of intent to make me feel good about having it handy.

He is meeting up with Batman so they can compare utility belts. ;)

Phil

Yeah, I wish! :)

I wonder what Fiddleback Batman carries

I would imagine an Asp in 3/16 tapered, with a nice swedge, in tuxedo with a twist, with a bat shaped pin out :)

One that was recommended by Mist. Or at least influenced by one of his reviews!!

Given the chance, the above mentioned would be the one I would recommend for him :)

Cool thread Mist. The monarch is a great little blade. I agree with you on the long term of it though. A bushie would be a much better long termer. The monarch is very handsome and has a lot going on; It makes for an impressive picnic blade. That meal looked just fine! Careful on the streets at night brother, she's always waiting for someone to slip up. Watch your six bro.

Thanks for the great thread Mist!! The pictures are top quality as always. The monarch looks like a great profile and that sheath is very nice too!

good looking knife

Yep, I think so too :)

Thanks Josiah, and I am always careful no matter where I am :)

That handle looks pretty comfortable. Really nice color combo too.

People with very large hands may run into some issues with the up turn of the pommel swell, but in my hand it is comfortable.

Thanks man, glad you liked the post. I think the Monarch is a very classy looking profile, and I really dig buds spider sheaths :)

I made the statement today in the office as Ken and I were going through the Friday thread and looking at this weeks batch ...."I need a monarch now" this thread further reinforces that
Thanks mist

Thanks for the great write up and insights, Mist.
Regarding the shot that shows the taper from the butt end … man, that taper coming down to almost exactly the same width as the white liners looks really sweet … that aesthetic "balance" just rings an almost audible chime for me.
Beautiful work. Great review.
