I have been carrying the Monarch as an edc for a month or so now, and I am really liking it in that role. I have to admit that I think I'd still prefer the handles of the Bushcrafter, Bushfinger, and KE Bushie if I were doing the long term bushcraft or primitive living type thing and was spending a great amount of time whittling and carving. However is all of the short term uses and holds I have used and am likely to use with a knife in an edc role, I actually prefer the handle of the Monarch. It's not an overly long handle, so it doesn't take up a lot of room or stand out of the pocket a lot, but there is the perfect amount of room between the guard and the down-trun of the pomml swell for all four fingers to get a secure purchase in over-hand and under-hand grips. In a pinch grip, which I use a lot in detail cutting and scraping type uses the upturn of the pommel swell curves around the heal of my palm for a very natural feel. The knife isn't much longer than the Hiking Buddy, if any longer, but the taller handle gives me more control in twisting the blade, and the wider blade gives me more to work with and more lateral strength. I am enjoying using the knife very much in an edc role. I thought I'd post a few photos from the past month.
The Monarch on the fringes of our urban jungle
I really dig the color coordinated Jou Fuu sheath
Nice lines, I love the taper and contours.
Excellent fit and finish as usual.
It feels at home in my daily gear as my phone, my laptop, my ever present flashlight, and of course my coffee...
It has handled snacks and lunches in the park very well.
The fact that the near by urban center is much like any other in the US, and elsewhere I imagine, is one of the reasons for liking the feel of this knife in an overhand grip. With it being the larger of the two knives on my person, and the easiest to deploy, it would be the primary tool chosen for the defensive role if push came to shove and the situation deteriorated that far.
I feel more comfortable having this knife in this role considering the fact that, while a CCW will allow you to legally carry a side arm into a place that serves alcohol, but as of yet it is still illegal to carry in our local city parks even with a permit. Also considering the time of day I am usually in the area.
And, under much cheerier circumstances, the Monarch also handles and evening meal quite well
