Looks like a good time Flexxx. You get to shoot any?

That's heaven right there... wide open desert plain in early May. I can almost hear the wind. Only way it could be better? If it was August :)

So you didn't kill anything??? :( That sux!!! I was really looking forward to seeing a rabbit cooking over an open fire. Next time; next time....

I killed a few, sorry no pics.

I don't eat jack rabbits, most of them got disease and make a good meal for the coyotes.....

Oh ok. I got me a rabbit up here late last year. Good eatin'! It's a bummer they have diseases down there. I was gonna try my hand at tanning but didn't know even where to start so I tossed the hide not too long ago. It was salted so it's not like it was just sitting there. :)

Yeah right, nothing but an excuse to post a pic of yourself in a tanktop, flashing your tatoos and a tricked out rifle :D

Seriously though, sounds like a great way to pass time.

Isn't rabbit disease a seasonal thing? I know in AZ there are times when you can't get a tag for them because of that, and then others when they're fine (?). Dunno, not a hunter, but every person I works with seems to be.

You go to the desert and shoot rabbits just for fun, then let them lay around on the ground to rot away or getting eaten by coyotes? Wow.

If they're diseased, they'll die sooner or later, either from the disease itself or from another critter eating them because they're sick and can't run away. But going somewhere, killing animals and letting them lay around is just irresponsible and wasteful.

You're an idiot.

You obviously know nothing about vermin, the disease they spread, the biological threat to both human and animal alike (other bunnies, who make other sick bunnies, who make....), or that 20 dead bunnies = food for one free-range head of cattle over a year's period. Take a look back to the Dark Ages when plague was spread by rats over all of Europe and tell me again how irresponsible it would be to just kill all the rats or other vermin you could.

Killing vermin is a time-honored tradition and certainly hones skills for more important kills.

Feeding the yotes and buzzards is the only thing a jack is good for. They carry Rocky Mountain Fever and other nasties. Plague, if I am not mistaken, as well.

That beef you bought at the market or butcher's did not get there all by itself, and I highly doubt it was carne de rata.

Thanks everyone...

Give me your address and from now on I will ship the dead rabbits to your place to eat......

Well, thanks for clearing that up for me, I actually didn't know anything about vermins and diseases and stuff. But insulting me for that is just ridiculous and uncalled for. I didn't brag about killing animals at all, I love to eat meat, but I hate killing anything without the need. Flexxx said he doesn't eat them because most of them carry diseases. But plague? Highly unlikely. I understand the reasons for pest control, I just didn't know about the need for individual persons to go out and shoot little critters for that reason. Can't be too effective, considering the rate at which those animals reproduce.

There is more hunters then you think and it helps keep the population down, I think Nevada is booming with jacks this year.

Oh and I love shooting those little critters for fun.....

Maethor, the plague is pretty much alive and well in the Western/Southwestern US. There are a few reported cases every year but normally there are few fatalities. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) the primary carriers/reservoirs of the plague (bacteria Y. Pestis) in the USA are Marmot, Rabbits, Rats, Mice and Terrestrial squirrels.

If I remember correctly, most of the news articles I see about plague related deaths are from Arizona.

Guys, I often post ironic stuff here and I sometimes go a bit over the top, but I am dead serious with this post and it is very important that you read this very carefully.

I didn't want to insult anyone or his way of living here. I think the little argument that is starting to brew here is due to cultural differences. In Germany hunting is something that you pay serious money for, so it is reserved to very few people. You have to rent your own hunting grounds and you are only allowed to hunt there, you pay for every kill, you have to have every animal looked at by a veterinarian and two government agencies and so on. Hunting isn't something that someone does as a sloppy hobby (i.e. going hunting for a weekend a year) here. We don't have any pests in need of controlling here. Where I used to live (suburban area in Berlin, right next to a forest) wild boar are tearing up yards, gardens and parks every spring, so the government hires a company to shoot a few of them. This is what I'm used to, and this is how I know pest control (or population control in this case) is done.

This is the main reason I was so shocked about your actions. I just couldn't imagine an individual person carrying out pest control in his/her freetime.

I also thought that the plague is definitely not existant anymore. Sorry for that, I'm one fact smarter now.

I hope I didn't upset anyone more than I normally do :D and we can all love each other again as the Beckerheads do.

I also want to chime in and say that there are better ways to address a difference of opinion than calling someone an idiot. I like to think we are a better group and can discuss subjects like adults.

There is somewhat of a cultural difference going on here - in the US there are some animals that really are destructive and need their population controlled via hunting. Some examples would be wild boar / pigs, groundhogs, jackrabbits, prairie dogs, deer, coyote, etc. The reasons can vary from disease transmission to property / crop / herd destruction. As a hunter, I always want to have as painless and ethical kill as possible, and to eat or donate animals that are good to eat. I don't know anyone who eats jacks or coyotes.
