Money CLip vs. Wallet

BOTH!

Keep money (cash) in the money clip and use the wallet to haul around receipts, credit cards, ID, etc.

I just find it easier this way. And if I lose one, I at least have the other.

I like money clips. Word to the wise though...if you have a magnetic money clip, don't put your ATM card with it in your front pocket. C'mon, ask me how I know. :o

Both, just for the reasons CD spec'd. Cash in the clip, then cards, receipts, and "stuff" in the wallet.

ALso carry a leather business card holder with stash cash and calling card.

As Burke said, don't put cards around magnetic clips, nor should you have the cards back-to-back. Often, when placed back to back, the mag stripes contact each other and can compromise the data and make them unreadable by CC machines.

I am a wallet man. I like the fact that everything is in one singular place. I live in a very low crime rate area, so getting my wallet picked is not really a concern. I just ordered on of those new T.H.E. wallets they are selling at www.actiongear.com The waiting list for one of them is kind of long, I will let you all know how it works when I get it.

Fossil Wallets

I use the Magnetic front pocket wallet when I don't wanna carry around a big wallet. It does NOT effect credit cards. The have a special strip that prevents it from happening.

I use both, the wallet is card holder size and carries my drivers licence, union card, AAA card, bank and credit cards and currency worth $20 and up. The clip is for bills under $20, so I don't have to pull out my wallet everytime I buy a beer.

Yep, that's me too.

Plastic, ID, and Franklins in the leather, and the little stuff in the clip. If I'm just dashing around town doing errands and such, just the clip.

Credit cards and ID are in one stack with heavy duty rubber band around. Cash is just folded. Not glamerous but it works great! Also carry Pocket Daytimer for notes. Beats a wallet!- Dick

I prefer wallets, but may change to a clip with some slots for ID and cards.

Has anyone given thought to a cheap "throwaway" wallet that would contain ~20 in small bills, some fake credit cards (I get card offers with fake cards-no name and the number is 1234567890123456), and a note that says "Sucker!" (j/k)? I don't really worry too much about losing cash to a mugger, but getting a new license, new health insurance card, Costco card, and cancelling the credit cards would really suck. Keeping all the real stuff in a clip in the front pocket and a throwaway in the rear would give peace of mind (except for the guy digging for the wallet in my back pocket and finding the Military clipped to my waistband). Hopefully, I'll have enough situational awareness so that the BG doesn't get the drop on me in the first place.

For the last two years or so, I have gone for the Clip, The no frills Zippo style, One black and a plain stainless model(not at the same time).

The only thing I carry is my Drivers Licence, ATM Visa and a Platinum Visa and misc $$$. Ive got a stack of credit cards for all the major stores in town, but I dont shop that often, and when I do, then I carry the ones I will need for the day.

Back when I did carry a wallet, I was always thinning it out of everything I didnt "Have" to have in there, Not much for carrying pictures and all.

Update:

I picked up a bifold Fossil front pocket wallet a week ago or so. It's got the metal clip on the outside. So far, I've discovered a couple of hidden advantages:

1. It's small, so I just put in the most important cards. I feel liberated from my big wallet!

2. Front pocket carry is, so far, proving to be comfortable. My butt and back have been thanking me ever since I switched to front pocket wallet.

3. Perhaps most importantly: Previously, whenever I carred my endura in my front pocket, it would eventually turn sideways in my pocket, making me look as if I were in a perpetual state of arousal. When I saw people lookingl, I'd shrug my shoulders and apologetically explain that I'm Italian, and well, you know the Italians. However, with the front pocket wallet, I slip the endura in just behind the wallet, and the endura is held upright. It is extremely comfortable, and the two work well together to hold each other in place, at least in jeans. Haven't tried dockers yet.

The one downside is the typical money clip downside. I like how a wallet hides my money from people. With a money clip, everyone sees what you're carrying. I've solved this problem as follows: I arrange my money in the money clip in separate bundles. The singles are all folded together, then the 5s, etc. When I pull my wallet out, I keep it lether side up (money clip side down), so no one can see the money itself. I feel with my fingers for the denomination bundles I want, and pull just that out. I'm not sure if this routine will eventually get old.

Money clip and smallest of wallets.

I started carrying a money clip over 20 years ago and the one I have now has so much sentamental value (and beauty) that I'd never give it up willingly. I do arrange my bills in order with the ones on the outside and the clip either across the bills or clipped end-on so that I can pull the bills I want without revealing the larger ones inside.

I carry the smallest wallet available with an ID window, a small slot behind the ID and two small slots opposite. It folds enclosing the Driver's liscence and CCW, insurance card, and credit card. The business card pocket on the outside carries 2 of my personal and 4 of my company cards.

I've got a Blackberry on my belt so I don't need planner, calender, phone list, etc. Perhaps I should put my insurance info into the Blackberry and dump another card?

I've been using a Deep Pocket Wallet from Sharper Image for over 8 months now. It's basically a money clip (velcro) with slots and two pockets. I have the version with a coin pocket so that my change doesn't jingle in my pocket. The wallet has an internal pocket which I use to carry business card and assorted pieces of paper. It works great in the left side zip pocket of my Docker Mobile Pants.

Axel -- another interesting wallet! Can you tell me a bit more about the money clip? I don't understand what it is, based on your description and the description on the site.

My minimum wallet capacity has to be able to hold the following things, which I consider the absolute smallest minimum set. Can your wallet hold all this in the slots?

- License
- credit card
- ATM card
- 2 business cards
- medical insurance card
- AAA card
- and of course, cash (bills)

Thanks!

budrichard,

Your minimalist approach reminded me of when I used to do some work for Getty Oil around 1979-80. The General Counsel had no wallet or money clip. He would take a Getty envelope and place his cards/cash inside, then fold it once for a pocket size. He would write notes/appointments on the outside. When he had used all the note space, he'd just swap for a fresh envelope. It was a simple but effective system.

Switched from a rear wallet to money clip and front pocket wallet about five years ago, when I felt that the thicker wallet was starting to contribute to back/hip problems. The front pocket wallet is one of those designed for the front pocket, and I use it just for cards and receipts. It goes in the left front pocket.

The money clip is of course....a stainless steel Spyderco! I started with a Co-Pilot, and unfortunately lost it playing Frisbee in the park (along with about $120). My wife couldn't stand the way I moped around after that, so she bought me a new stainless Spyderco Experimental model (just had a number, no name) that was about the same size. It goes in the right front pocket.

This system has worked great for me - used it a lot when I was flying twice a week. Of course, that was pre-9/11. I am glad I don't have to fly that often now. I'd miss my money clip...
