Money

I never had a collection as a kid. I had a buck 110 and another traditional folder that I don't even remember the brand of anymore.

However, when I was a kid I did work picking rocks, vaccinating chickens, and bailing hay for extra money in the summer.

Same, no collection here until I started working my senior year of HS. I owned a swiss army knife, and a WWII bayonet my uncle gave me. That was enough to start the obsession though... :p

My dad gave me a Barlow for my seventh birthday. I spent all of my money on BB's, pellets, and .22 shells, so the Barlow was it until my uncle gave me a KaBar hunting knife when I first started carrying a rifle deer hunting when I was ten.

Do you have a collection started yet? What types of knives do you like?

I didn't have--and didn't need--anything more than a Camillus Cub Scout knife as a kid. The idea of "collecting" knives or having more knives than I needed didn't really occur until I was well into adulthood with a career...

How did you earn money as a kid for your knife collection?

You just go with it.

If you make $10 a month doing odd jobs, than your probably only going to spend $10 on knives. If you have a knife, that's all you need, when you make more, you buy more. :)

I'm thirteen and know the feelin' but you just need to come to grips to the fact that you just can't buy $350+ on a knife (unless you have a job that can handle that.)

Good luck!

The Kid

Yeah I am 14, glad to find another kid on here. I have 200 saved up to get me a benchmade 51 with all the accessories I want it will be 275. I am running out of odd jobs to do and I am trying to get it by summer. Any odd jobs that you've done that get quite a bit?

And as for my collection I like odd Swiss Army knives, throwing knives and tomahawks. I do have a small collection but I use almost all of the stuff with exception to an M48 tomahawk due to it breaks easily, but that's alright because I have a Lagana vtac, I also have a bunch of sak that I don't use.

Not sure what kids do for money these days. A lot of it depends on where you live. If you live in a city you might offer to mow the neighbor's lawn for $10-$20 a time. There normally older people who will gladly pay you to do odd jobs for them like mowing, hard work, maybe help clearing out an attic or garage...ect.

You could get the word out that you are willing to do some manual labor and see what happens. I did all sorts of things as a teen to make money by just telling everyone I knew I was willing to work for some money and didn't complain about what I got paid. I went out busted my butt, sometimes I got more than expected sometimes less but generally speaking if you work hard most people will pay you fairly. Just remember, during the summer you could mow a lawn for $10 and have $10 or just spend time not making any money. You have to decide for yourself what your time is worth but remember that you are learning a good life lesson even if you are not getting paid what you want to be. Chances are when you're an adult you will have a job or two that you don't think you're paid enough to do.

Things I did (beyond what I listed above):
Broke up a sidewalk/drive way with a sledge for a neighbor (got $100 and more work for that).
Worked for a trucking company cleaning the Truckers lounge/bunks and being a gopher for the truckers (they'd give my $5 to run to the store for them or something like that).
I helped a guy caulk a log home, that took about a week and I got $200 for that.
I mowed lawns
Worked installing docks at lake cabins some

Just whatever people needed help with and I could help with in anyway.

Sometimes I got paid like crap but got good experience.

Thanks for the help! My dad is in the townhomes so there is plenty of old people to help out here, and I could also mow lawns but that will have to wait till summer because I am busy with stuff after school until then, I will keep all those ideas in mind. Has anyone gotten rid of garden pests as a kid and has ideas on how to start that?

I've heard you can find pet sitting jobs that pay $20/Hr. Wish I knew where though. :D

I don't think my parents would let me bring in dogs:P weird you say that though because I will be payed to take care of a snake and a rabbit, all I have to do is bike to the guys house and feed the snake on Tuesdays and go in every other day to feed his daughters rabbit!

I didn't really have any way so I just had to wait until it was my BDay to get a new knife.

That's what I am trying not to wait for but I got 200 over 2 months I am just running out of ideas, I am in Minnesota and we've had a lot of snow days this year including one 2 weeks ago, but every time we had one I called up all my friends and we'd shovel driveways and get about 40 each day

Take any first job you can get and work hard so you can build references.
I shoveled saw dust at a lumber yard when I was twelve and then roofing when I was 15. Not sure what its like where you are but roofing is the easiest decent pay entry level construction job here. A guy pulled into the lumber yard and asked if I wanted to do roofing and the rest is history. Funny thing is I had more money for knives back then, then I do now.
Check Kijiji or some similar website. Post saying you will do odd jobs for people and see if any one has posted looking for help with landscaping, manual labour etc...
Or kitchens seem to hire first timers if manual labour isn't your thing. Just apply like crazy till you find something. Good Luck! Let us know when you get a new job!

Yeah, I did roofing some too as a teen. Mostly tear-off and gopher sort of stuff but it was hard work. Paid pretty well given I had no skills or much experience.

Ya, that's what I mean, many of us started as roofing helpers. There is a lot of grunt work involved with running shingles up and down a ladder....perfect for a young buck with no experience and decent pay to keep em going. It's a pretty common introduction into construction around these parts. Roofers are always looking for helpers and hopefully in time you can find a good one who will teach you a few things and then you can go from there.
