Monster chopper advise??

1095 and 5160. Affordable so you can do much more for the money, post finished pictures thanks :)

Try to differentially harden, looks great when patina after use :)

Pics will come for sure, I know how "some" of the people in here just LOOOOOVE "biggish" zombie whackers, lol....
Already sketched it up, and going to order the steel tomorrow.
Steeltype is called "ARNE" and is almost the same as 5160. Only drawback is that the prices for steel in Norway get more steep the LESS you buy, haha.
Will try to get pics of the first drawing tomorrow, I`ll put the ESEE 4 in the pic to show you the actuall size of this monster.

Xanra: I`m thinking of making it 10 or 12 mm thick, that`s 0.393 or 0.472 inch so yeah it`s going to the fat side alright, haha.
I feel the horns growing on my head already, can`t wait to se this thing forming....

Another vote for 1/4" thick 5160.

Trying to post first picture of the project.....
ESEE 4 on the side for size proportions....
PS: The white thing over the knife drawing, is kind of like a wiev from the top, lol, that is the 10mm one, but I think maybe I`ll go for the full 12mm.
12 mm is almost half an inch, so that would be über-cool, lol...

that knife is .310 at the thickest point. I can make one thicker. I have made thicker knives but for me they don't chop as good.

Another vote for 5160, though I absolutely love my A2 knives......L6 is great also, but like all of them.....as long as the heat treat is top notch then none of these steels will fail!!!

Bobber - nice design, since you used an ESEE4 for scale, it makes me think of a Junglas on steroids.
The tapered tang and distal taper should make for a nice balance.

1066VIK: I sure hope so, was at the steelmill today and scored me about 50 pounds of tha Uddeholm ARNE steel got it for under the price they pay to buy it in to stock. Leftovers from a big job they delivered. That steel is the carbon-answer to ELMAX. And was recommended as a Norwegian answer to 5160-steel.
Hope to get the chopper started tomorrow night, and I went for the 12mm or 0.472".
I also have the possibility to make the blade even wider, because the blank is 4" wide as is. But I think that would be taking it to far to the large side, it just would`nt look as good i think..

4" wide stock would be great for making a full tang hatchet after you finish the knife if you have access to a bandsaw.
best of luck and looking forward to the work in progress pics.
